About the Role

This is a senior, hands-on builder role where you will lead applied AI at Fetch, setting the direction, choosing models and approaches, building them, measuring their effectiveness, and shipping them into real products. Your core job is to make Fetch exceptionally good at understanding pet health, which will power various aspects of pet care, veterinary support, health record interpretation, and insurance automation. We seek individuals obsessed with modern models, who move quickly, experiment constantly, and can turn new capabilities into reliable products.

Responsibilities

  • Lead applied AI at Fetch, setting the direction, choosing models and approaches, and building them.
  • Measure the effectiveness of AI models and ship them into real products.
  • Build and own Fetch’s pet health intelligence layer, including models and systems for understanding longitudinal pet health information.
  • Manage model quality end-to-end, including datasets, evaluations, model selection, prompting, retrieval, post-training, fine-tuning, guardrails, and monitoring.
  • Develop a robust evaluation system with clear benchmarks for model performance and failure analysis.
  • Create domain-specific AI capabilities leveraging proprietary pet health data and veterinary knowledge.
  • Develop multimodal understanding capabilities for health records, documents, and images.
  • Ensure safe production AI by working with vets, compliance, and engineering teams.
  • Contribute to product direction and decide on AI development priorities.
  • Build the foundation for an exceptional AI team.

Requirements

  • 3+ years building and shipping ML or AI systems in production.
  • Strong experience with modern LLMs and applied AI systems.
  • Deep understanding of evals – how to construct them, measure model quality, and use failures to drive improvement.
  • Experience with post-training, fine-tuning, RAG, structured outputs, tool use, or similar techniques.
  • Strong instincts around training data – understanding what data matters, how to structure it, and how to improve its quality.
  • Sufficient engineering ability to take an idea from experiment to production.
  • Good judgment about when to use different AI approaches (frontier models, open-source models, retrieval, fine-tuning, simpler methods).
  • Strong product thinking and focus on user enablement.
  • Comfortable working directly with domain experts to translate human expertise into data, evals, and model behavior.
  • Experience in health, veterinary care, or insurance is useful but not required.
  • A PhD is not required; focus is on built experience, thinking, and learning speed.
