About the Role
We are seeking a Network Engineer to manage the reliability, security, and advancement of Cognition’s global office networks. The ideal candidate will have experience operating networks in a fast-paced startup environment, demonstrating adaptability, high ownership, and expertise in wireless and routing. This role involves designing, implementing, and maintaining scalable wired, wireless, and cloud-connected networks, ensuring robust observability and automation.
Responsibilities
- Own scalable networks and office delivery.
- Design, deploy, and operate high-performance wired and wireless networks across various office environments.
- Optimize RF and implement resilient architectures using technologies like VLANs, LACP, OSPF, BGP, VRFs, QoS, and redundant internet/core paths.
- Manage network delivery for office openings, expansions, and moves, including procurement, circuit turn-up, and vendor coordination.
- Build secure connectivity across offices, cloud infrastructure, and Devin environments using VPC peering, transit networking, IPsec, GRE, or SD-WAN.
- Create repeatable reference architectures, configuration standards, high-availability patterns, capacity models, inventories, diagrams, runbooks, and deployment playbooks.
- Own network monitoring and observability for availability, performance, capacity, and employee experience.
- Utilize telemetry and analytics to proactively identify network degradation.
- Develop scripts, tooling, and data pipelines in Python, Go, or TypeScript to enhance reliability and derive actionable insights from network data.
- Apply infrastructure-as-code, APIs, source control, and CI/CD to automate network configuration and deployment.
- Leverage Devin and AI to improve network reliability, troubleshooting, and automation.
- Implement secure, identity-aware network access, segmentation, certificate-based authentication, and least-privilege infrastructure administration.
- Partner with Security on firewalls, threat detection, secure remote access, and incident response.
- Troubleshoot network issues systematically across the OSI model using packet analysis and telemetry.
- Build strong relationships with stakeholders, gather feedback, communicate effectively during incidents, and drive continuous network improvement.
Requirements
- 5+ years of hands-on experience designing, deploying, and operating enterprise or campus networks, or equivalent practical experience.
- Experience building and operating networks in a hypergrowth startup, thriving amid rapid change, ambiguity, and high ownership.
- Demonstrated depth in wireless RF engineering and enterprise switching and routing.
- Successful delivery of branch offices or large office environments.
- Strong knowledge of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, routing protocols, VPN, and zero-trust remote access technologies.
- Experience designing for high availability, fault isolation, capacity, and scale.
- Experience with network performance monitoring, telemetry, alerting, and analytics.
- Experience automating network operations with a modern programming or scripting language.
- Experience applying APIs, infrastructure-as-code, Git, or CI/CD to configuration delivery.
- Working knowledge of network security and identity controls, including IEEE 802.1X, NAC, AAA, RBAC, segmentation, IDS/IPS, or related technologies.
- Experience coordinating carriers, contractors, and vendors while maintaining clear internal ownership.
- Strong judgment, communication, and service orientation.
- Track record of carrying ambiguous problems through design, implementation, and ongoing operation.
