About the Role
As a Protein Engineer - Biosensors, you will design, build, and optimize proteins that translate between cells and machines, converting neuronal activity into interpretable imaging signals. Your work will establish the molecular foundation for next-generation brain-computer interfaces.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement biosensor engineering strategies, including rational and computational design, directed evolution, and combinatorial libraries, to enhance protein-based biosensor performance.
- Build and characterize protein variants at high throughput to rapidly test and iterate hypotheses, implementing and optimizing scalable workflows from library generation and expression in mammalian cell lines to standard and custom assays.
- Collaborate with the machine learning team to develop models linking sequences and structures to function, guide future construct generation, and enhance intuition.
- Explore the mechanisms of complex biomolecules and translate this understanding into creative, innovative designs with support from biochemistry, structural biology, and computational teams.
- Develop novel screening and validation methods to accelerate the design-build-iterate loop and ensure a smooth transition to in vivo applications.
Requirements
- PhD in Bioengineering, Biophysics, Biochemistry, or a related field, or equivalent experience leading research projects end-to-end.
- Experience with biosensors or other proteins with novel functionality.
- Proficiency in library construction, protein expression in mammalian cells, and standard characterization.
- Comfort using computational approaches for protein engineering and understanding the fundamental principles involved.
- Mechanistic thinking and strong biophysical intuition, motivated by understanding how things work.
- Enjoyment working with dynamic, multi-state proteins and/or complex protein assemblies.
- Strong collaboration skills and natural communication with experts across disciplines.
- Energized by 0->1 innovations and seeking creative ways to improve.
- Desire to be part of a fast-paced team working on frontier scientific and technical problems.
