About the Role
The Senior Accountant will ensure the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial reporting for Olde Thompson, leading key aspects of the month-end close process and supporting financial reporting for the business across all manufacturing locations. This role will maintain strong internal controls, support audit and compliance requirements, and partner with cross-functional teams to improve financial processes and reporting accuracy.
Responsibilities
- Maintain a strong understanding of core balance sheet accounts, ensuring accurate classification, amortization, and cutoff.
- Ensure proper accounting and reconciliation of lease-related balances.
- Apply consistent and accurate cutoff practices for revenue, expenses, and liabilities.
- Ensure all balance sheet accounts are supported by clear, audit-ready documentation.
- Identify, investigate, and resolve aged or unusual balances in a timely manner.
- Maintain discipline around journal entry preparation, including proper support, review, and adherence to internal controls.
- Ensure subledger-to-general ledger integrity across key cycles (AR, AP, inventory, fixed assets).
- Maintain consistency in accounting treatment and proactively identify areas requiring policy clarification or improvement.
- Support a clean and efficient close process by minimizing post-close adjustments and rework.
- Demonstrate ownership of data accuracy within the ERP environment.
- Lead assigned components of the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process.
- Own balance sheet accounts, ensuring completeness, accuracy, and timely reconciliation.
- Perform detailed variance analysis and provide clear, actionable explanations to management.
- Support preparation and submission of monthly group reporting packages.
- Oversee AR and AP-related accounting activities with a focus on accuracy, cutoff, and financial risk mitigation.
- Review aging reports and assess collectability of receivables; support bad debt reserve analysis.
- Monitor AP aging and payment cycles to ensure appropriate liability recognition and cash management.
- Work with off-shore teams for AR and AP to evaluate and strengthen internal controls.
- Monitor and account for factoring and supplier financing programs.
- Identify risks related to credit exposure, vendor concentration, and liquidity, and escalate as needed.
- Maintain and reconcile fixed asset subledger, including additions, disposals, transfers, and depreciation.
- Ensure proper capitalization of assets in accordance with accounting policies.
- Review and validate capital expenditure (CapEx) projects and related accounting treatment.
- Account for leases, including Right-of-Use (ROU) assets and lease liabilities.
- Prepare and review lease schedules, amortization, and related disclosures.
- Ensure accuracy of asset valuations and support periodic impairment assessments.
- Support inventory accounting, including variance analysis, NRV and reserves assessments.
- Understand inventory write off processes and management of obsolete inventory and related reporting.
- Support tax-related activities, including property tax, sales/use tax, 1099.
- EPR reporting preparation as required.
- Budget support.
- Review of overheads reporting and liaising with departmental heads.
- Purchase order mapping for accuracy of overheads reporting.
- Identify and implement process improvements, including automation and standardization initiatives.
- Occasional travel to Oxnard or NJ on a need basis.
- Ad hoc support as required.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required.
- Minimum of five (5) years of progressive accounting experience.
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles and financial reporting standards (IFRS).
- Experience with ERP systems such as SAP ERP would be an asset (Plex is our ERP and training support would be provided).
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including pivot tables, lookups, data analysis.
- CPA or CPA-eligible preferred.
- Experience in manufacturing, food industry, or inventory-heavy environment is preferred.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across teams and geographies.
