About the Role
The IP Senior Counsel will lead Mercari's IP team, focusing on IP strategy development and promotion, building invention discovery mechanisms, designing patent portfolios, advising on product and new business development, handling international IP laws and regulations, promoting AI adoption in IP operations, and leading IP-related disputes and negotiations.
Responsibilities
- Develop and promote IP strategies that contribute to Mercari Group's business growth.
- Build a system for discovering inventions in conjunction with business and technology roadmaps.
- Design patent application policies and portfolio strategies, including decision criteria for applications, defining areas to protect, and optimizing investment allocation.
- Provide advice on product development and new business development based on competitor analysis, FTO, and clearance.
- Investigate overseas intellectual property laws and regulations for cross-border business and handle responses to overseas authorities.
- Promote ChizAI-Native (AI adoption in IP operations).
- Lead IP-related disputes and negotiations, coordinating internally and externally, organizing policies, and collaborating with external counsel.
- Engage in cross-functional collaboration and consensus-building with Engineering, Product, Business, and Legal departments.
Requirements
- Alignment with Mercari Group's and each company's mission and values.
- Certified Patent Attorney (弁理士).
- Over 7 years of patent practice experience, including invention discovery, patent acquisition, and Office Action responses.
- Experience in formulating and promoting IP/Patent strategies (key areas, priorities, investment allocation).
- Experience leading invention discovery, application strategy, portfolio management, or competitor analysis.
Skills
- Team management or lead experience managing multiple cases.
- IP experience in software, platform, or AI domains.
- Experience with US/global patent portfolios and practical English communication.
- Experience investigating overseas IP laws and regulations and responding to overseas authorities.
- Experience in standardizing/improving IP operations and promoting AI utilization.
- Experience handling IP-related disputes and negotiations.
- Proficient Japanese (CEFR - C1).
- Independent English (CEFR – B2).
