About the Role
Data is crucial to Whatnot’s mission to bring people together through commerce. As our newest Data Engineer, you’ll build and scale the systems that power data-driven decisions across the company. You’ll own the strategy that empowers the Analytics team’s tooling which includes but is not limited to internal reporting, agentic tooling, and experimentation.
Responsibilities
- Own the analytics data strategy end-to-end, defining architecture for internal reporting, business intelligence, agentic tooling, and experimentation, then driving it into production.
- Drive the AI strategy behind internal tools, identifying opportunities for agentic and LLM-powered tooling to enhance business understanding and leading the roadmap for reliable systems.
- Define and own the domain data strategy, establishing key metrics, underlying data, and standards for modeling, naming, and usage across the organization.
- Guarantee consistency, accuracy, and speed in reporting and intelligence by building monitoring, testing, and reconciliation systems.
- Translate raw data into business understanding by partnering cross-functionally to turn complex data into clear, actionable insights.
- Set the technical bar for the data organization by establishing best practices and mentoring the broader org toward higher craft as an IC lead.
Requirements
- Minimum of 7+ years of experience as a data or software engineer building data warehouses, distributed data systems, or event-driven architectures.
- Ability to design and implement data models using dimensional, Data Vault, or ledger-style techniques.
- Deep hands-on expertise with modern data tooling across ingestion (e.g., Kafka, Debezium), transformation (dbt, Spark, Flink), orchestration (Dagster, Airflow), and observability (Monte Carlo, Great Expectations).
- Experience operating cloud data warehouses such as Snowflake, BigQuery, or Redshift, including schema design, cost optimization, and workload tuning.
- Comfortable writing production-grade code in Python or SQL languages.
- Experience integrating with CI/CD and infrastructure-as-code workflows.
- Enjoy partnering across disciplines (engineering, product, analytics) to translate messy business requirements into elegant data systems.
- Thrive as a self-starter in a fast-moving environment, owning both technical design and operational outcomes.
- Must live within commuting distance of our New York, Seattle, Los Angeles, and San Francisco hubs.
