About the Role
The Senior Specialist, Health & Safety will develop and administer Occupational Health and Safety programs, ensuring compliance with legislation and Seneca's needs. This role involves advising management on OHS issues and promoting adherence to policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Assists with the development and implementation of Occupational Health and Safety policy, procedures, and safe work instructions.
- Encourages employee and manager involvement in safety procedures and programs.
- Conducts comprehensive risk assessments, inspections, and identifies safety culture, environmental factors, and operational procedures.
- Performs gap analysis against industry standards, identifies improvement opportunities, and collaborates with management on action plans.
- Manages the Early Defibrillation (AED) Program.
- Assists with other OHS initiatives as required.
- Develops and participates in accident prevention programs, policies, and procedures.
- Manages OHS incidents and events, ensuring appropriate investigation, corrective actions, and reporting.
- Ensures compliance with applicable health and safety and environmental legislation and standards, preparing necessary documentation.
- Collects, analyzes, and monitors injury data to identify trends.
- Conducts health and safety related risk and hazard assessments, and job hazard assessments (JHA's) across departments and academic schools.
- Coordinates and conducts Indoor Air Quality Assessments and basic Industrial Hygiene Sampling.
- Participates in developing and conducting health and safety educational and awareness training.
- Provides employee training, including WHMIS, safe lifting techniques, new employee orientations, and workstation setup.
- Develops training materials/resources for diverse staff groups.
Requirements
- Two or more years of work experience in occupational health and safety within the public sector.
- Demonstrated experience working within a unionized environment is an asset.
Skills
- Demonstrated expert knowledge in Occupational Health and Safety legislation, standards, and best practices.
- Advanced analytical skills to identify, research, and resolve health and safety concerns.
- Ability to interpret analytical/technical reports related to health and safety.
- Ability to use and maintain industrial hygiene equipment.
- Ability to work under pressure or in a crisis during emergencies.
- Ability to travel between campuses and other work locations as required.
- Excellent organization and project management skills.
- Strong ability to plan, prioritize, and execute diverse assigned tasks.
- Ability to adjust objectives to meet needs.
- Well-developed client service, interpersonal, and communication skills (verbal and written).
- Ability to interact effectively with a multi-cultural/racial/able staff and students.
- Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook etc.).
- Proficient computer skills in Microsoft 365 apps (Power BI, SharePoint, Teams, and OneDrive etc.).

- Post-secondary Diploma or Degree in Occupational Safety and Health or other related field or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Registered Safety Technician designation is required.
- Canadian Registered Safety Technician designation preferred.
