About the Role
The Custodian supports the daily cleaning, maintenance, organization, and general upkeep of the high school campus, ensuring a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for students, staff, families, and visitors. The ideal candidate is dependable, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in an active school setting.
Responsibilities
- Clean and maintain classrooms, offices, hallways, stairwells, common areas, and other assigned spaces.
- Clean, sanitize, and restock restrooms.
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, wipe surfaces, and remove trash and recycling.
- Monitor high-traffic areas and respond promptly to spills, litter, or other cleaning needs.
- Maintain entrances, sidewalks, and surrounding areas.
- Assist with the setup and breakdown of furniture, tables, chairs, equipment, and supplies for school events.
- Move boxes, deliveries, furniture, supplies, and equipment.
- Receive or assist with school deliveries and distribute materials.
- Maintain custodial closets, cleaning supplies, and equipment.
- Notify supervisor of maintenance concerns, damaged equipment, leaks, safety hazards, or needed repairs.
- Assist with minor facilities tasks and basic building upkeep.
- Support snow, ice, and inclement-weather cleanup.
- Prepare classrooms and common areas for the beginning and end of the school year and for special programs or events.
- Follow procedures for the safe use, storage, and handling of cleaning products and equipment.
- Follow all school safety, security, fire safety, and emergency procedures.
- Maintain appropriate boundaries and professional conduct around students.
- Respond to custodial or facilities needs in a timely and professional manner.
- Perform other assigned custodial and facilities-related duties.
Requirements
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong reliability, punctuality, and attention to detail.
- Ability to communicate professionally with staff, students, families, vendors, and visitors.
- Willingness to perform a variety of tasks and respond to changing needs.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise appropriate judgment.
- Must be able to safely perform physical responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodation, including standing, walking, bending, reaching, stooping, pushing, pulling, climbing stairs, and lifting/carrying supplies, furniture, boxes, and equipment.
Skills
- Basic knowledge of cleaning products, equipment, and safe cleaning practices preferred.
