You will be accountable for the teams, technical leads, shared platforms, and operating standards that engineering organizations rely on to develop, validate, secure, package, and release software at scale. Your role will involve defining and executing the annual and multi-year delivery engineering strategy and roadmap to measurably improve developer productivity, software quality, operational consistency, release reliability, adoption, and security posture. You will also establish shared engineering standards and governance, influence senior leaders, and make critical investment, staffing, and prioritization decisions.
Responsibilities
- Lead multiple delivery capability domains and the engineers and technical leads responsible for them.
- Own the annual and multi-year roadmap for platform investments, establish priorities and success measures, and align capacity, staffing, vendor, and tooling decisions.
- Direct the strategy, tooling, and execution across CI/CD, artifact management, production containers, code quality, and security scanning.
- Improve development speed, release reliability, and consistency through CI/CD tooling and shared components.
- Ensure software packages, build outputs, and containerized workloads are reliable, traceable, secure, and standardized.
- Drive capabilities for code quality and security scanning to enhance maintainability and enable secure-by-default delivery practices.
- Partner closely with security, infrastructure, developer experience, and application engineering teams to identify friction and improve workflows.
- Own technical and organizational decision-making for the delivery engineering portfolio, ensuring solutions align with broader platform strategy and business goals.
- Set priorities across multiple concurrent efforts, resolve cross-functional trade-offs, and manage risks, dependencies, and capacity.
- Establish and evolve engineering processes, delivery standards, governance, and secure-by-default practices.
- Use metrics to evaluate platform effectiveness and hold teams accountable for operational outcomes.
- Coach and develop technical leads and engineers, build a strong leadership bench, and create succession and development plans.
- Partner with Talent Acquisition and HR on hiring, organization design, workforce planning, and performance management.
- Drive adoption of shared delivery platforms and standards across multiple engineering organizations.
- Present recommendations, performance results, and investment trade-offs to senior management.
- Plan and manage the team’s operating capacity and approved tooling or vendor investments, balancing cost, reliability, security, and developer experience.
Requirements
- Typically has 7 or more years of experience with 3 or more years of management experience managing software engineering teams.
- Demonstrated success developing leadership talent.
- Experience with one or more core delivery domains: CI/CD systems, artifact repositories, container platforms, code quality tooling, software supply chain controls, or security scanning platforms.
- Strong technical judgment and understanding of modern software delivery architecture.
- Ability to challenge technical decisions, assess risk, and guide complex trade-offs.
- Demonstrated ability to contribute to engineering strategy, improve processes, and align execution with business priorities.
- Experience leading multiple engineering capability areas and delivering results across complex, cross-organizational technical initiatives.
- Strong people leadership skills encompassing coaching and mentoring senior engineers, technical leads, and managers; performance management; succession planning; talent development; team building; and organization design.
- Strong organizational and operational leadership skills, including annual and multi-year planning, portfolio prioritization, execution management, service accountability, risk mitigation, capacity planning, and vendor or tooling investment decisions.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and executive-influence skills.
- Demonstrated ability to align technical and non-technical stakeholders, resolve sensitive cross-functional trade-offs, and gain adoption of shared standards.
