As a Direct Support Professional, you will be a crucial part of an individual's support system, helping them achieve meaningful lives and pursue their dreams. This role requires compassion, dedication, and a genuine desire to foster friendships and advocate for the rights of individuals with developmental disabilities.
Responsibilities
- Help individuals achieve meaningful lives by listening to their dreams and teaching skills for chosen lifestyles.
- Encourage individuals to express their preferences and involve them in activities aligned with their interests and future goals.
- Assist individuals in developing and maintaining positive community relationships.
- Uphold the rights of individuals and empower them to self-advocate.
- Apply a person-centered philosophy and utilize teachable moments throughout the day.
- Understand individuals' needs and preferences through active listening and observation.
- Maintain a positive attitude towards work and colleagues.
- Ensure the health of individuals supported, which may include medication administration, following medical directives, attending appointments, and seeking emergency care.
- Prioritize the safety of individuals by providing supervision as outlined in their service plans.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Valid driver's license preferred, depending on program needs.
- Some experience in healthcare or human services is a plus.
