About the Role

The Community Program Coordinator will establish and maintain effective working relationships with community leaders and organizations, develop a robust volunteer and student placement program, and conduct applied research to determine client needs. This role involves developing partnerships, securing facilitators for workshops, and working with the Case Management Team to facilitate access to housing supports and employment readiness programs. The position also ensures compliance with Health and Safety requirements and adheres to the values and philosophy of The Salvation Army.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with community leaders, organizations, and residents.
  • Participate in local community planning initiatives and represent the shelter on relevant committees.
  • Work proactively with stakeholders to support community relations.
  • Respond to community concerns in a timely and respectful manner.
  • Represent the shelter at community tables and ensure all voices are heard.
  • Act as a community resource for conflict resolution, mediation, and consensus building.
  • Develop a robust volunteer program for the shelter.
  • Develop a robust student placement program.
  • Perform on-call duties as scheduled.
  • Conduct applied research to determine client support and programming needs.
  • Develop a work plan to engage community members and social service providers in delivering programming.
  • Develop partnerships with other social service providers to increase programs and services.
  • Secure facilitators for skill-building workshops.
  • Work closely with community service providers and internal program teams to ensure coordinated services.
  • Facilitate easier access to housing supports by developing relationships with providers.
  • Support programming to assist clients in employment readiness.
  • Assist the Director and Assistant Director in ensuring Health and Safety compliance.
  • Perform workplace inspections.
  • Conduct information sessions.
  • Assist with incident investigations.
  • Assist with employee health and safety training.
  • Assist in correcting substandard acts or conditions.
  • Assist in commending employee health and safety performance.
  • Perform employee safety observations.
  • Ensure compliance with specific shelter requirements within sections 25 & 26 of the OHSA.
  • Adhere to standards consistent with the values and philosophy of The Salvation Army.
  • Participate fully in staff meetings and in-service training.
  • Engage in formal supervision and performance evaluations.
  • Adhere to policy and procedure manuals, Employee Handbook, and Toronto Shelter Standards.
  • Become familiar with job descriptions for each position.
  • Make suggestions to the Management team for improvements.
  • Represent the organization in a professional manner.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
  • Acts as a Team Lead/Working Supervisor.
  • Maintain the department annual budget in collaboration with the Corps Officer/Community Ministries Officer.

Requirements

  • Minimum two-year Diploma in Human Services, preferably a degree in community development, social work or related.
  • Certificate in First Aid/CPR, Crisis Intervention and Conflict Resolution.
  • One to three years minimum of significant work-related experience in the homeless or community development sector.
  • Experience in community development work essential.
  • Program planning experience an asset.
  • Volunteer management experience an asset.
  • Experience with extremely marginalized homeless people with mental health problems, addictions, concurrent disorders and familiarity to a wide variety of resources to meet client needs.
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License and a satisfactory Driver’s abstract.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army.

Skills

  • Ability to develop and implement basic applied research (survey, interviews, focus groups).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated public speaking and facilitation skills.
  • High level of comfort working within an extreme diverse and multicultural environment.
  • Superior written skills.
  • High level of proficiency with the Internet and Microsoft Office.
  • High degree of confidentiality.
  • Ability to provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.

Salary/Compensations

  • $58,531.20 to $73,174.40
  • Maximum of $87,817.60
