About the Role
The NYISO is seeking a Research and Engineering Intern to support the development of quantitative metrics that measure differences between Physical Dispatch and Economic Dispatch solutions. These market-clearing processes can produce differences between physically feasible generator dispatch instructions and the prices produced by the market. The intern will design and implement a reusable software tool that calculates and visualizes these differences across market scenarios to help evaluate the pricing and scheduling effects of proposed electricity market enhancements.
Responsibilities
- Develop quantitative metrics that measure and characterize differences between Physical Dispatch and Economic Dispatch solutions.
- Design and implement a reusable software tool for calculating the identified metrics.
- Create visualizations that communicate analytical results clearly.
- Evaluate dispatch differences across multiple market scenarios.
- Identify key drivers of observed pricing and dispatch outcomes.
- Apply power system optimization, economic dispatch, and data analytics concepts to market-clearing results.
- Test and validate the analytical approach and software tool.
- Document the methodology, software functionality, assumptions, and findings.
- Collaborate with engineers and researchers to refine requirements and incorporate feedback.
- Prepare written summaries and presentations describing the analysis and results.
Requirements
- Strong foundation in energy markets, unit commitment, economic dispatch modeling, or data analytics.
- Ability to develop quantitative metrics and interpret complex analytical results.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to test, validate, and document technical work.
