About the Role

The Barclaycard Payments Legal Team provides legal support to the Barclaycard Payments acceptance business, advising on commercial contracts, payment products, regulatory change, and customer/supplier matters. This role is ideal for a commercially minded lawyer seeking to advance their in-house career in a dynamic, regulated, and technology-driven sector. As a Barclaycard Payments Legal Counsel VP, you will collaborate with business colleagues, manage a diverse legal portfolio, and benefit from the support and resources of a leading organization.

Responsibilities

Develop and implement best-practice legal strategies for risk management and compliance.
Provide legal advice and support for the bank's payments activities, including merchant acquiring, card issuance, cross-currency payments, payment systems, and mobile payments.
Represent the bank in legal proceedings related to payment services, such as litigation, arbitration, and regulatory investigations.
Draft and review legal documents, including payment services agreements, cardholder agreements, and other payment-related agreements, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and negotiating with counterparties where necessary.
Proactively identify, communicate, and provide legal advice on applicable laws, rules, and regulations (LRRs), staying updated on changes and ensuring LRRs are allocated to and reflected in relevant policies, standards, and controls.
Contribute to or set strategy, drive requirements, and make recommendations for change.
Plan resources, budgets, and policies; manage and maintain policies/processes; deliver continuous improvements and escalate breaches of policies/procedures.
Advise key stakeholders, including functional leadership teams and senior management, on functional and cross-functional areas of impact and alignment.
Manage and mitigate risks through assessment, in support of the control and governance agenda.
Demonstrate leadership and accountability for managing risk and strengthening controls related to team activities.
Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of organizational functions to contribute to business goals.
Collaborate with other work areas and business-aligned support areas to stay informed about business activity and strategies.
Create solutions based on sophisticated analytical thought, comparing and selecting complex alternatives.
Conduct in-depth analysis with interpretative thinking to define problems and develop innovative solutions.
Incorporate outcomes of extensive research into problem-solving processes.
Build and maintain trusting relationships and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders to achieve key business objectives, utilizing influencing and negotiating skills.

Requirements

Qualified solicitor, barrister, or equivalent lawyer with relevant post-qualification experience.
Experience in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating commercial contracts.
Ability to provide practical legal advice in a commercial or regulated environment.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain legal issues clearly to non-lawyers.
Good organization and matter-management skills, including the ability to manage competing priorities.
A collaborative, curious, and solutions-focused approach, with sound judgment and attention to detail.
Experience in payments, merchant acquiring, financial services, fintech, technology, or another regulated sector is highly valued.
Knowledge of payment services or electronic money regulation is highly valued.
Experience with technology, outsourcing, supplier, or data-related contracts is highly valued.
Experience supporting business transformation, carve-outs, legal-entity reorganizations, or contract-transfer programs is highly valued.
