About the Role

Vizzia is developing two video surveillance products: video-based traffic enforcement for the UK market and ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) for legal requests. Both products utilize a common technical infrastructure comprising field units, an edge-to-cloud pipeline, and a SaaS platform for officers. The role involves taking ownership of a significant portion of the backend for both products, spanning the full edge and cloud spectrum, and contributing to the team's quality standards.

Responsibilities

Build and operate services on field units, including camera communication (VAPIX, ISAPI, ONVIF), NX Witness integration, and local SQLite storage.
Optimize CPU and RAM usage on resource-constrained units and minimize 4G/5G bandwidth consumption without compromising user experience.
Debug production units using SSH, logs, and incident triage across the fleet.
Design and operate Hono APIs, event-driven workers on the LavinMQ bus, and the Postgres/Drizzle data layer.
Orchestrate fleet operations from the cloud, ensuring resynchronization after network outages with no data loss.
Deploy and operate services using GitHub Actions, Helm, GKE, and Datadog monitoring and alerting.
Co-own both enforcement and ANPR projects from technical specification to production, considering legal constraints like evidential integrity, audit trails, retention, purge, and GDPR.
Architect the shared ingestion and edge-to-cloud layer for both products.
Act as a backend lead during production incidents, capable of independently handling edge or cloud incidents.
Write and challenge Architecture Decision Records (ADRs).
Ensure all modules are tested, harden critical code sections, and utilize CI for regression detection.
Adhere to monorepo conventions, including moon, bun, and ten bounded contexts.

Requirements

4 to 8 years of backend experience, with a significant portion in SaaS.
Proficiency in TypeScript/Node.js in a production environment.
Experience building and operating event-driven distributed systems, including message buses, workers, idempotency, and retries, with associated logging, monitoring, and incident management.
Curiosity about systems, networks, and protocols.
Experience with AI coding tools.
Ability to pick up new topics proactively, articulate technical choices, and demonstrate care for public sector problems.
