About the Role
As Backend Engineer - Data & Orchestration, you will own and manage the company's data platform, ensuring its reliability, cleanliness, and simplicity. You will work across data pipelines and backend services, making critical decisions about system architecture and implementation.
Responsibilities
- Manage and maintain data collection systems, including scrapers and platform integrations, addressing issues like rate limits and API changes.
- Own end-to-end event-driven data pipelines, from orchestration to storage, ensuring fault tolerance and cost-effectiveness.
- Develop and implement monitoring and alerting systems to ensure the health of services and integrations.
- Perform checks on data freshness, volume, schema, and values to proactively identify and resolve issues.
- Work on production backend services and APIs that handle data flow.
- Manage CI/CD, infrastructure as code, and cloud resources for data systems, including access and secrets management.
- Consolidate and document existing data systems, removing redundant components.
- Collaborate with non-technical colleagues to explain data capabilities and limitations.
- Guide and mentor junior engineers as the team expands.
Requirements
- Experience operating real production systems in a small, fast-moving company.
- 3 to 10 years of hands-on engineering experience, with a focus on owning production systems.
- Advanced Python skills, including async code and long-running data jobs.
- Sufficient backend experience to work on production services and APIs.
- Experience keeping unreliable external data sources operational (scrapers, APIs).
- Proficiency in handling proxies, rate limits, and anti-bot measures.
- Experience designing and running event-driven, fault-tolerant pipelines handling millions of records daily.
- Experience with orchestration tools like Airflow or Dagster, or task queues.
- Experience with databases such as Postgres, ClickHouse, MongoDB, or Redshift.
- Experience implementing data reliability and monitoring systems.
- Experience with monitoring tools like Datadog or equivalents.
- Comfort with Docker, Terraform, CI/CD, and cloud environments.
- Experience conducting access reviews and setting up role-based access and secrets management.
- Experience owning and simplifying messy data setups end-to-end.
- Ability to explain technical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience guiding junior engineers or leading small teams.
- Strong engineering fundamentals and judgment, with the ability to leverage AI coding tools effectively.
- Ability to ship code quickly while maintaining a clean codebase.
- Ability to understand context before building solutions.
- Thrives in a fast-paced and performance-oriented environment.
