About the Role

Advocates is seeking a Mentor (DSP/1:1 support staff) to support a woman with a developmental disability who may exhibit verbal outbursts and physical aggression. The role involves assisting her with goals at home and in the community, building a weekly routine, and planning daily activities.

Responsibilities

  • Build a weekly routine.
  • Gather daily activities and events and put them into a calendar.
  • Assist with working on goals both at home and in the community.
  • Log time, mileage, and service documentation electronically.
  • Participate in and/or seek out new volunteer positions in the community.
  • Practice safety in the home and the community.
  • Engage in conversations and activities with others.
  • Assist with grocery shopping, cooking, and personal care tasks.
  • Ensure a clean and safe living space.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Must have a valid email address.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and auto insurance if required for the job assigned.
  • Must demonstrate sound decision-making skills.
  • Must demonstrate understanding for the Agency mission.
  • Must believe in the philosophy of person-centered services, self-advocacy, and the right and ability of people we serve to self-direct their supports and services.
  • Must demonstrate patience and compassion.
  • Must have the ability to read and comprehend instructions and correspondence.
  • Must have the ability to write correspondence.
  • Must have basic reasoning skills including the ability to analyze and problem solve.
  • Must be able to tolerate a moderate noise level in the work environment.
  • Must be able to handle distractions.
  • Ability to handle physical aspects of the job, including sitting, standing, using hands to reach, walk, push, or lift up to 50 pounds.

  • Previous experience working 1:1 in a related service environment preferred
  • Related experience working with an individual with autism is greatly appreciated and preferred

Education Level

  • GED or High School Diploma preferred

Salary/Compensations

  • $16.00 - $22.00 Hourly
  • $22+ per hour (depending on behavioral experience) when providing direct support
  • Hourly rate for indirect/training is $16 per hour
