About the Role
Matter is hiring a Head of Marketing & Communications to own how the company and its people are perceived globally. This role requires building a brand that attracts talent, investors, and industry attention by making technical breakthroughs feel inevitable and significant.
Responsibilities
- Build the Matter Brand: Own and sharpen Matter's identity, voice, visual language, and market position.
- Make Matter feel ambitious, technically credible, and culturally interesting.
- Guide creative direction for all company materials, including website, launch materials, recruiting collateral, photography, videos, presentations, merchandise, events, and physical spaces.
- Maintain an exceptionally high bar for quality, ensuring Matter stands out from generic industry players.
- Build and manage a team of creative professionals and vendors, while being capable of hands-on execution.
- Make Matter Impossible to Ignore: Own Matter's presence across X, LinkedIn, and emerging platforms.
- Develop a social strategy to grow Matter's audience and sustain interest.
- Transform engineering milestones, technical discoveries, company culture, and team stories into compelling narratives.
- Create shareable moments and build anticipation around launches and milestones.
- Strategize Matter's participation in industry conversations.
- Build the CEO Into a Recognized Technology Voice: Expand the CEO's external presence and establish him as a respected voice in deep tech, AI, space, hardware, and venture-backed technology.
- Ghostwrite content for the CEO across platforms like X and LinkedIn.
- Create opportunities for the CEO's participation in relevant podcasts, stages, panels, and events.
- Build relationships with key figures in the technology ecosystem.
- Own Press and Narrative: Build relationships with media covering technology, AI, aerospace, defense, science, and startups.
- Generate meaningful earned media for Matter.
- Develop compelling stories for journalists.
- Understand news cycles and identify opportunities for Matter's inclusion in relevant conversations.
- Create launch strategies for major technical and company milestones.
- Manage media pitching strategies, including exclusives, social momentum, embargoes, and background information.
- Develop and maintain a consistent company narrative across markets and products.
- Turn Deep Technology Into Great Stories: Understand complex technical subjects and translate them into engaging content.
- Own Matter's long-form editorial platform and blog.
- Develop various content types, including technical explainers, essays, announcements, opinion pieces, founder communications, product stories, interviews, and behind-the-scenes engineering stories.
- Ghostwrite for executives, engineers, and researchers.
- Utilize LLMs for efficiency while maintaining high writing standards and judgment.
- Build Matter's Place in the Deep-Tech Ecosystem: Own strategy for conferences, speaking engagements, industry gatherings, and events.
- Identify valuable conferences and secure speaking opportunities for Matter executives.
- Develop creative event activations.
- Host Matter's own events, including dinners, technical salons, and recruiting events.
- Build relationships within the deep-tech, AI, space, defense-tech, and venture communities.
- Make Great People Want to Join Matter: Partner with leadership and recruiting to attract exceptional talent.
- Showcase the company culture and the stories behind the technology and its creators.
- Develop recruiting campaigns and content targeting technical communities.
- Create a company presence that attracts unsolicited interest from top talent.
- Make Investors Want In: Position Matter as a company of interest within the venture ecosystem.
- Communicate the technical scope and credibility of the company to investors.
- Understand the venture-backed technology ecosystem and how momentum is built.
- Create a sense of opportunity without manufactured hype.
Requirements
- Unusually online presence, with knowledge of emerging technology companies, founders, writers, podcasts, conferences, and events.
- Understanding of venture-backed deep tech culture.
- Extremely strong taste and opinions on effective technology marketing.
- Exceptional writing ability, capable of understanding and translating highly technical subjects.
- Ability to make complex topics understandable without oversimplifying.
- Comfortable operating across diverse environments: engineering labs, media relations, executive events, and social media.
- Highly creative yet intensely results-oriented.
- High energy and ability to move quickly, follow through, and create opportunities.
- Humility to perform any necessary task, from strategic narrative development to event coordination and website copy editing.
- Demonstrated track record of creating impactful work over holding specific titles.
- Experience in startup communications, technology journalism, venture, brand, growth, content, creative direction, or PR.
- Proven ability to grow audiences.
- Instinct for finding and telling great stories.
- Deep familiarity with the venture-backed technology ecosystem.
- Established relationships across media, technology, founders, investors, creators, or events.
- Ability to generate earned attention.
- Comfort working directly with founders and senior executives.
- Ability to understand and credibly communicate technical products.
- High agency and ability to operate with minimal structure.
- Demonstrated speed, creativity, judgment, and relentless follow-through.
- Experience in deep tech, space, AI, hardware, defense technology, robotics, science, or similar technical industries is highly valuable.
- Ability to identify multiple story angles from technical developments.
- Experience rewriting or improving technical announcements.
- Ability to articulate why certain technology companies have strong brands.
- Belief that most corporate social media is ineffective.
- Understanding that building a founder's profile extends beyond basic post scheduling.
- Recognition that significant marketing opportunities can arise from small, intimate events.
- Versatility in communication and task execution, including calling journalists, texting founders, briefing designers, interviewing engineers, editing essays, and reviewing websites.
- Proactive approach to tasks without requiring explicit direction.
- Instinct to focus on making the right people care about company developments.
- Ability to make Matter a company that attracts top engineers, investors, customers, and media attention.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or national, a lawful permanent resident (green card holder), or eligible to obtain required U.S. Department of State authorizations.
