About the Role
We are looking for a Mechanical Engineer to join our hardware team and help take our glove from a working prototype to something we can build in small batch manufacturing. You'll join a passionate and talented hardware team and work closely with Haptica's CEO to ensure our technology delivers the reliability, robustness, and comfort that top robotics companies require.
Responsibilities
- Own Haptica's build end-to-end, including assembly SOPs, jigs and fixtures, kitting, and BOM and inventory management.
- Manually build tens of units to own your craft, including designing enclosures, manifolds, fittings, and fixtures.
- Build out our test program, including writing protocols to ASTM or similar standards, developing in-house test rigs, and preparing samples for external labs.
- Partner with supply chain vendors and contract manufacturers to transition from manual assembly to small batch production, defining scope, testing, and manufacturability.
- Integrate Haptica with customers by partnering with major robotics companies to bring Haptica into real-world teleoperation and deployment setups.
- Drive the mechanical engineering roadmap to ensure easy and reliable integration with various hands and grippers.
- Partner closely with designers to bring engineering constraints to the table and drive a cohesive vision and design language.
- Set the standards for process and documentation, including PRDs, BOMs, and SOPs, to ensure excellent handoff from design to manufacturing.
Requirements
- 3 to 5+ years in mechanical product design with at least one product brought from concept to production.
- Proficiency in CAD software (Onshape preferred, SolidWorks or Fusion acceptable) with good habits for top-level assemblies and versioning.
- Understanding of standards required by robotics companies for production deployment.
- Experience designing and running test protocols to ASTM or similar standards.
- Comfort with mechatronics, including experience with sensors, custom boards, flashing firmware, and making small firmware changes.
- Ability to use a multimeter and oscilloscope to troubleshoot issues.
- Hands-on prototyping skills, including 3D printing, operating a desktop CNC, machining, and managing fixtures.
- Experience working with manufacturing partners overseas, including obtaining quotes, calibrating timelines, and adjusting designs for manufacturability.
