About the Role

Join Campfire as a Staff AI Engineer to build production AI agents that help customers get real accounting work done. You’ll combine strong software engineering fundamentals with hands-on experience developing and operating agentic applications, from automating financial workflows to helping customers understand and act on their financial data. This is a hands-on technical leadership role where you’ll shape our agent architecture, ship customer-facing features, and establish engineering practices for reliability.

Responsibilities

Work closely with engineering, product, and design to turn ambiguous problems into software.
Own agent quality in production through evaluations, tracing, monitoring, and debugging.
Balance accuracy, latency, cost, and complexity in agent design.
Choose appropriate solutions (agent, deterministic workflow, or combination).
Lead complex initiatives.
Make architectural decisions across teams.
Mentor engineers.
Raise engineering standards while staying close to the code.
Experiment, iterate, and ship fast.
Take ownership end-to-end, from prototyping to deployment and monitoring.
Improve AI agents based on real usage.
Collaborate closely with engineering, product, and design.
Communicate technical decisions clearly.
Help other engineers grow.

Requirements

Strong software engineering background.
Substantial experience designing, building, and operating production backend systems.
Proficiency in writing maintainable Python.
Sound judgment in APIs, data models, distributed systems, and testing.
Hands-on experience shipping LLM-powered agents used by real customers.
Experience with tool calling, orchestration, retrieval, and integration with application data and workflows.
Practical judgment around agent permissions, data access, human approvals, and recovery from partial failures.
Experience owning consequential production systems.
Ability to explain tradeoffs, failures, and lessons learned from shipped systems.
Experience taking AI agents beyond demos and prototypes.
