About the Role

Citizen Action is seeking a Community Campaigns Organizer for New York City to engage community members in basebuilding and expand organizational membership through issue-based campaigns. This role reports to the Co-Director of Campaigns Organizing.

Responsibilities

  • Recruit organizational members using campaign issues and electoral campaigns to grow the organization through outreach strategies.
  • Develop and implement strategic local campaigns aligned with statewide priorities.
  • Create and execute an outreach and recruitment plan to grow the membership base for chapter meetings, committee meetings, mobilization efforts, and campaign tactics.
  • Utilize organizing tactics such as 1:1s, phone banking, text banking, tabling, and door canvassing to grow chapter members.
  • Lead outreach events with members, focusing on directly impacted individuals to amplify the need for change in issue campaigns.
  • Train volunteers and members in strategic education and leadership skills, including strategy development, event planning, media interaction, and storytelling.
  • Ensure community leaders have roles and develop skills in organizing for social change.
  • Manage data requirements, including entering 1:1s, volunteer activities, turnout, and volunteer profiles into organizational systems.
  • Collaborate with the Canvass and Mobilization Director to create recruitment phone banks, canvass lists, and outreach scripts.
  • Develop outreach strategies based on legislative campaigns, demonstrating an understanding of elected officials' political profiles.
  • Identify, plan, and execute local campaigns that connect to and benefit statewide and Federal issue campaign work.
  • Recruit members and leaders for organizational leadership structures and identify potential candidates for political office.
  • Create content and collect stories for weekly emails, social media, and other communications opportunities.
  • Implement campaign strategies such as letters to the editor and op-eds with Communications staff.
  • Perform other duties assigned by your supervisor.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 3 years of organizing experience, with at least 2 years in a paid, professional role.
  • Experience working on issue campaigns and/or electoral campaigns is preferred.
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience planning and utilizing basebuilding tactics such as phone banking, door canvassing, tabling, and facilitation of workshops and meetings.
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience planning and utilizing issue campaign tactics such as event planning and lobby meetings.
  • Willingness to learn and effectively use the organization’s training methodology, including demonstrating skill, providing shoulder-to-shoulder work, tracking/analyzing results, and giving feedback.
  • Commitment to track the progress of basebuilding and outreach work through organizational data systems.
  • Familiarity with Google Drive and Zoom.
  • Experience with VAN, Scale to Win, Mobilize, and Action Network is preferred.
  • Willingness to learn outreach tools.
  • Cultural competency and proven ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to be flexible with work planning and priority setting.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to travel for work commitments.
  • Able to speak Spanish fluently is preferred.
