About the Role
The Dental Clinic Receptionist is the first point of contact for patients at San Francisco Community Health Center’s (SFCHC) dental clinic, ensuring a welcoming and supportive environment. This role manages patient appointments, coordinates with dental staff, and handles administrative tasks in a fast-paced healthcare setting. The position requires strong communication, multitasking, and problem-solving abilities, reporting directly to the Dental Director.
Responsibilities
- Greet patients and assess their needs.
- Connect patients with appropriate dental clinic staff.
- Verify patient insurance eligibility for government plans.
- Process patient payments via cash, credit, or check according to fee schedules.
- Answer clinic phone calls and respond to voicemails promptly, ensuring continuous coverage.
- Coordinate with clinic providers to address urgent dental, medical, or behavioral health needs within 30 minutes.
- Enroll new patients and ensure completion of new patient documentation.
- Schedule appointments and conduct reminder calls.
- Follow up on patient no-shows and cancellations, documenting actions in the EHR.
- Resolve patient complaints and escalate issues as needed.
- Prepare and clean dental operatories, including sterilizing instruments.
- Seat patients in exam rooms and ensure consent forms are signed before procedures.
- Maintain agency reception signage for compliance.
- Perform general office duties, including mail handling and supply management.
- Conduct patient satisfaction surveys and collaborate on implementing improvements.
- Coordinate transportation for dental clinic patients.
- Collect and enter data accurately, including faxing and scanning documents.
- Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the dental clinic reception area.
- Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and agency events.
- Perform other assigned duties and responsibilities.
Requirements
- Minimum 1 year of experience working with diverse populations (LGBTQ communities, refugees/immigrants, people experiencing homelessness, multiply-diagnosed populations).
- High school diploma or equivalent work/life experience.
- Highly organized.
- Skilled in computer use, including Adobe Acrobat, medical/dental software documentation, MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail, follow-through, and reliability.
- Ability to collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team.
- Experience in customer service, office, and clerical work.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and privacy of patient information and records.
- Fully vaccinated against COVID-19, including booster shot.
- Up-to-date with vaccinations, including seasonal flu shot.
- Proof of TB clearance (within the last 12 months).
