About the Role

The Enphase Modeling and Controls team is seeking a Staff Firmware Engineer to develop, integrate, and validate the inverter control firmware at the core of the Solid-State Transformer (SST) platform. This role involves solving complex problems in power conversion and shaping control algorithms for inverter products, with a current focus on SST development for data center power infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement firmware, primarily in C and C++, for real-time operation and control.
  • Validate firmware through software simulations, hardware-in-the-loop testing, and prototype bench testing.
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines in Bitbucket Pipelines, including automated builds, static analysis, unit testing, and artifact generation.
  • Support power electronics and controls engineers during hardware bring-up by integrating, debugging, and tuning embedded firmware on inverter prototypes.
  • Optimize product solutions with firmware/hardware control co-design.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define firmware requirements, interfaces, and integration strategies.
  • Mentor junior staff.

Requirements

  • BS/MS/PhD Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • BS and 8+ years / MS and 6+ years / PhD and 3+ years’ experience in a similar (non-academic) role as an embedded software or firmware engineer.
  • Expert-level C and C++ proficiency, including memory management, linker scripts, bootloader development, and secure boot concepts.
  • Strong debugging and systems analysis skills, including diagnosing stack overflows, memory corruption, and hard faults; evaluating CPU utilization; and tuning task priorities.
  • Expertise in bare metal and real-time operating systems, including multithreaded programming and multi-core firmware development.
  • Familiarity with ARM Cortex-M4/M7 architecture.
  • Knowledge of microcontroller peripherals such as ADC, GPIO, PWM, SPI, and CAN.
  • Understanding of digital signal processing concepts and ability to implement them in firmware.
  • Experience testing and debugging code and hardware using tools such as J-Link debug probes (SWD), oscilloscopes, and protocol analyzers.
  • Proficiency with embedded toolchains and build systems, including GCC, GNU Make, CMake, and Python-based build and automation scripts.
  • Experience with containerized build environments using Docker.
  • Proficiency with Git version control.
  • Ability to take ownership of development tasks and drive them to completion with high quality.
  • Experience with AI-assisted development tools and workflows, including LLM-integrated coding environments (e.g., Devin, Copilot, or similar).
  • Zephyr development experience.
  • Familiarity with control loops and PID controllers.
  • Desktop and embedded Linux experience.
  • Familiarity with AC grid simulators and programmable loads.
  • Occasional travel domestically.
  • Candidates must be authorized to work in the US.
