About the Role

We are looking for a Principal Engineer to provide hands-on technical leadership across Intact’s InsurTech Claims and Billing Core Systems. This is a senior individual contributor role with broad technical influence. You will remain hands-on through prototyping, targeted code reviews, and technical troubleshooting when needed, while helping shape architecture, technology strategy, and engineering practices across the organization. You will help solve complex engineering challenges, advance technology strategy, and raise the technical capabilities of the teams around you through expertise, collaboration, and influence.

Responsibilities

  • Provide hands-on technical leadership through prototyping, targeted code reviews, and technical troubleshooting when needed to address difficult, complex challenges.
  • Lead the resolution of high-severity issues involving performance, reliability, security, cloud costs, and complex integrations across claims and billing systems.
  • Define architecture, technical standards, and technology roadmaps for Claims and Billing Core Systems.
  • Design scalable, resilient, secure, and cost-effective solutions in collaboration with architects and engineering teams.
  • Implement practical AI and agentic AI solutions, including frameworks and guardrails that improve engineering productivity.
  • Research emerging technologies and lead proof-of-concepts that support innovation and business outcomes.
  • Communicate technical decisions clearly, build alignment through influence, and mentor senior engineers and technical leaders.

Requirements

  • Senior or Principal-level experience in software engineering, architecture, or a related technical discipline.
  • Strong hands-on engineering experience, including prototyping, targeted code reviews, technical troubleshooting, and resolving complex production issues.
  • Proven expertise in system design, architecture, cloud platforms, APIs, microservices, distributed systems, security, and observability.
  • Practical experience implementing AI or agentic AI solutions in products, platforms, or engineering processes.
  • Expert hands-on experience with Java and Node.js is a strong asset.
  • Experience with Guidewire ClaimCenter and BillingCenter is an asset.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical trade-offs clearly to executive stakeholders.
  • A collaborative, low-ego, and people-first approach, with the ability to mentor others and lead through influence rather than formal authority.
  • A bachelor’s degree in computer science or computer engineering; a master’s degree or higher is an asset.
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada.
  • For candidates located in Quebec, bilingualism is required considering the necessity to interact on a regular basis with English-speaking colleagues across the country.
