About the Role

This role is foundational to enabling AIWI's mission by developing, maintaining, and executing on the research backlog. You will recruit and manage researchers to answer multi-disciplinary questions related to AI whistleblowing, driving outputs through to publication. This is a key hire as AIWI scales, combining research operations, project management of external experts, and hands-on editorial work.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a clear, current view of the research backlog, ensuring it is structured, prioritized, and visible.
  • Translate strategic priorities into concrete, well-scoped research questions.
  • Track dependencies and flag when priorities need re-examining.
  • Ensure the highest-priority questions are always moving forward.
  • Source contractors and fellows and match them to suitable research questions.
  • Scope engagements, agree on deliverables and timelines, and manage work through to completion.
  • Provide substantive feedback on drafts and keep engagements on track.
  • Keep researchers unblocked and delivering on time and at quality.
  • Own the draft-to-published pipeline across various formats, including publications, PDF guides, and presentations.
  • Edit outputs to a publication-ready standard and ensure they are in the right format for their audience.
  • Support the Education Delivery team in distributing finished work to insiders and partner organizations.
  • Establish and maintain templates, review processes, and quality bars for the research function.
  • Collaborate with the Tech team to build automation for problem discovery, literature review, or network maintenance.
  • Maintain a current pool of contractors, fellows, and expert reviewers.
  • Surface insights on research focus, recurring questions, and needed contractor profiles.
  • Flag areas where the research process can be improved.
  • Contribute to AIWI’s thinking on the development of the research agenda.

Requirements

  • Excellent judgment on research quality.
  • Pragmatism and speed in determining research turnaround times.
  • Broad range of research interests, including technical AI safety or AI policy, organizational dynamics, psychology, law, or journalism.
  • Collaborative and proactive in developing networks and identifying top researchers.
  • Relentlessly resourceful and operationally strong, capable of managing multiple workstreams in parallel.
  • Comfortable with hands-on editorial work when needed.
  • Track record of managing research projects or programs to completion, including external contractors, fellows, or academic collaborators.
  • Skilled in scoping work, spotting deviations, and course-correcting while maintaining relationships.
  • Epistemic humility and active seeking of feedback.
  • Interest in rapidly gaining an understanding of whistleblowing, legal, and security domains.
  • Backgrounds may include: Research manager, program manager, or chief-of-staff at an AI safety, governance, or evaluations organization; Researcher at a frontier company, think tank, or governance organization; Editor or research lead at a policy publication or research outfit; Former researcher at a fundamental strategy hedge-fund; Grantmaker or program officer with an AI safety portfolio.
