About the Role
The Immigration Staff Attorney provides comprehensive immigration legal services to Her Justice clients, focusing on low-income women and gender-diverse individuals, including survivors of violence. This role involves conducting legal consultations, providing advice, preparing cases for pro bono placement, and maintaining a small direct representation caseload. A key component is supporting the pro bono model by preparing cases, developing strategy, and mentoring volunteer attorneys. The attorney will also develop and deliver trainings, maintain case information, and represent Her Justice in external relationships.
Responsibilities
- Conduct intake consultations and assess legal issues for prospective clients.
- Provide advice and brief legal services for immigration issues.
- Deliver client-centered, trauma-informed legal services with sensitivity to survivors of violence.
- Prepare cases for pro bono placement, including client meetings, document gathering, and case summaries.
- Maintain a small direct representation caseload of immigration clients.
- Assist in cultivating volunteer attorneys through presentations.
- Serve as a liaison with law firms and build relationships to enhance the pro bono program.
- Mentor and provide substantive legal support to volunteer attorneys.
- Monitor the progress and quality of pro bono matters and maintain case information.
- Assist in organizing and implementing lawyer trainings, including serving as faculty.
- Manage and coordinate legal clinics with partnering law firms.
- Work with the immigration team to assess, develop, and strengthen the practice.
- Remain current on developments in immigration law, policy, procedure, and practice.
- Conduct legal research and analysis on emerging immigration issues.
- Participate in community outreach workshops, clinics, and public education initiatives.
- Participate in special events, including fundraising and volunteer recognition events.
- Serve as a substantive immigration law resource to Her Justice staff.
- Maintain complete, accurate, and timely case records and data.
- Contribute to data collection, case review, and program reporting.
- Recruit, train, mentor, and provide guidance to interns, law students, and volunteers.
- Participate in committees, working groups, and policy or systemic reform initiatives.
- Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with community-based organizations and other stakeholders.
- Facilitate appropriate referrals for clients whose needs fall outside Her Justice’s scope.
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
- Admission to practice law in New York State, in good standing.
- Minimum of 4 years of experience practicing immigration law.
- Substantial experience providing direct legal services to immigrant clients.
- Experience representing or accompanying clients before USCIS, Immigration Court, ICE, or other government agencies.
- Strong substantive knowledge of immigration law, policy, and procedure.
- Demonstrated ability to assess eligibility for immigration relief.
- Demonstrated ability to identify legal issues and develop case strategies.
- Experience representing clients in immigration matters relevant to Her Justice’s practice.
- Experience providing legal services to low-income, underserved, or marginalized communities.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively and sensitively with clients who have experienced trauma.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor, advise, or provide substantive legal guidance to attorneys, law students, or other legal professionals.
- Professional proficiency or fluency in Spanish or another language commonly spoken by Her Justice clients.
- Strong legal research, writing, analytical, and oral advocacy skills.
- Strong case management and organizational skills.
- Ability to independently manage a caseload, competing priorities, and time-sensitive deadlines.

- Significant experience representing clients in humanitarian immigration matters (preferred).
- Experience working specifically with survivors of intimate partner violence, sexual assault, trafficking, or other forms of gender-based violence (preferred).
- Experience working with law firms or corporate legal departments in a pro bono legal services model (preferred).
- Experience developing and delivering legal trainings, CLEs, practice materials, or other substantive legal resources (preferred).
- Experience supervising or providing ongoing guidance to law students, interns, fellows, paralegals, or volunteers (preferred).
- Experience conducting community outreach, Know Your Rights presentations, legal clinics, or other community legal education (preferred).
