About the Role
The Employee and Labour Relations Consultant provides coaching, strategic advice, and administrative support in labour and employee relations, collective agreement interpretation, and employment legislation for an assigned client portfolio.
Responsibilities
- Provides advice, assistance, and guidance to managers in an assigned client portfolio.
- Offers coaching, consulting, and strategic advice on human rights, labour and employee relations, collective agreement interpretation, employment and labour legislation, policies, and procedures.
- Advises managers and consultants on all phases of re-organization.
- Collaborates with People and Culture personnel to communicate pertinent information and documents.
- Ensures timely and effective delivery of People and Culture services, including consultation and advice on disciplinary and non-disciplinary matters, investigations, complaints, collective agreement interpretation, and workplace accommodations.
- Guides people leaders and assists with formal accommodation plans for workplace accommodations.
- Assists in developing, organizing, and leading workshops, guidelines, policies, and procedures for labour relations, collective agreement interpretation, and workforce planning.
- Works closely with bargaining unions to maintain positive employee and labour relations.
- Assists in the grievance process, including tracking, scheduling, investigating, attending and leading grievance hearings, and preparing written responses and settlement agreements.
- Gathers documentation for and attends mediations and arbitration hearings.
- Participates as a team member on negotiation teams for collective agreement negotiations.
- Interprets and administers multiple collective agreements, assists in grievance hearings and conflict resolution, and promotes a positive labour relations environment.
- Participates in labour management meetings and other meetings with union representatives.
- Provides work direction and leadership within the labour relations unit.
- Mentors, coaches, and provides work direction to Employee and Labour Relations Associates and HR Assistants.
- Provides leadership and guidance to resolve complex People and Culture issues and ensures quality service delivery.
- Assists with recruitment activities for an assigned client portfolio, ensuring compliance with collective agreements.
- Develops employment equity hiring strategies for client groups.
- Participates, implements, and supports key initiatives in the labour relations strategy for heavily unionized portfolios.
Requirements
- Post-secondary education in Human Resources, labour relations, public administration, or other relevant field.
- 5 years of progressive experience in Human Resources and Labour Relations in a unionized setting, preferably in the broader public sector or social service sector.
- Demonstrated knowledge of human resource and labour relations practices, contractual obligations, collective agreements, and labour and employment legislation (e.g., Employment Standards Act, Labour Relations Act, Human Rights Code).
- Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Experience providing advice, assistance, and guidance to managers and consultants in all phases of re-organization.
- Experience developing and preparing correspondence and reports.
- Experience using a variety of software products including Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Strong customer service, interpersonal, negotiation, and communication skills.
- Well-developed analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work under pressure, multi-task, and meet deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, take initiative, and follow through on work assignments.
- Ability to work respectfully with a diverse community of clients, co-workers, and external consultants.
- Ability to work effectively within a team environment with strong relationship-building skills.

Salary/Compensations
- $93,035.14 - $102,338.65
