About the Role

This position provides guidance on R&D matters and training to employees and contractors in AbbVie South San Francisco R&D. The individual will collaborate with local EHS team members and stakeholders to implement and align programs and R&D EHS policies, ensuring employee safety, a safe working environment, environmental protection, regulatory compliance, and support for regulatory inspections.

Responsibilities

Develop, implement, and maintain EHS programs, procedures, and training for site personnel.
Provide subject matter expertise in chemical safety, biosafety, waste management, ergonomics, and other assigned safety programs.
Serve as a technical resource in Critical Safe Work programs, providing contractor safety and support for construction, renovation projects, and lab moves.
Investigate near misses and incidents, identifying root causes and recommending corrective actions.
Track and analyze EHS metrics to identify trends and drive continuous improvement.
Support EHS regulatory inspections and internal audits, including follow-up on findings and corrective actions.
Collaborate with R&D training coordinators to update training content in the e-Learning System.
Lead EHS risk assessments of site/lab processes and equipment and collaborate with stakeholders to develop risk mitigation strategies.
Lead laboratory Gemba walks with site leadership, document findings, action items, and prepare summary reports.

Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree (EHS related, Engineering, chemistry) plus 5+ years of EHS related experience or Master’s Degree (EHS related, Engineering, chemistry) plus 3 years of EHS related experience.
EHS professional certification is preferred but not required.
Working experience in implementing EHS regulations, conducting incident investigations, and managing cross-functional teams.
Ability to establish measurable project goals and implementation plans.
Ability to balance conflicting work demands and develop action plans.
Ability to develop standards and/or policies that meet business objectives.
Ability to actively listen, build, and maintain effective working relationships with internal/external colleagues and stakeholders.
Ability to resolve conflict constructively.
Knowledge of Environmental, Health and Safety programs and Cal/OSHA, DTSC, BAAQMD and EPA regulations.
