About the Role
Responds to emergency calls via ambulance, providing patient assessment and Basic Life Support. Handles various medical emergencies, including CPR, bleeding control, trauma stabilization, and childbirth.
Responsibilities
- Assess patients and handle emergencies using Basic Life Support equipment and techniques.
- Perform CPR, control bleeding, provide non-invasive treatment of hypoperfusion, and stabilize injured bones and spine.
- Manage environmental emergencies and emergency childbirth.
- Use semi-automatic defibrillator.
- Assist patients with self-administration or administer emergency medications as per state and local protocols.
- Respond to calls when dispatched and drive ambulance to emergency sites.
- Observe all traffic ordinances and regulations.
- Use appropriate body substance isolation procedures.
- Assess scene safety, gain access to patients, and assess injury or illness extent.
- Extricate patients from entrapment.
- Communicate with dispatcher for additional assistance or services.
- Determine nature of illness or injury and visually inspect for medical identification emblems.
- Use prescribed techniques and equipment to provide patient care.
- Provide additional emergency care following established protocols.
- Determine patient status and priority for emergency care.
- Assess and monitor vital signs and patient condition for changes.
- Reassure patients, family members, and bystanders.
- Assist with lifting and carrying patients, and properly load them into the ambulance.
- Determine appropriate medical facility and provide ongoing medical care en route.
- Report patient's condition and care provided to the receiving facility.
- Ask for medical direction from a medical control physician and carry out orders.
- Assist in moving patients from the ambulance into the medical facility.
- Report observations of the patient's emergency and care provided to emergency department staff.
- Comply with regulations in handling deceased individuals, notify authorities, and arrange for protection of property and evidence.
- Replace supplies and properly dispose of medical waste.
- Properly clean contaminated equipment according to established guidelines.
- Check all equipment for future readiness.
- Maintain ambulance in operable condition, ensuring cleanliness and organization.
- Determine vehicle readiness by checking fluid, fuel, and air pressure levels.
- Maintain familiarity with all specialized equipment.
- Be prepared to work transport units, 911 EMS units, or temporarily in the Dispatch Center.
- Perform all other duties as required.
Requirements
- Must have a valid driver's license with no more than 2 points.
- Must maintain current NYS DOH EMT Certification.
- Must be able to read a map and handle electronics such as radios.
- Must maintain knowledge and skill for all necessary equipment.
- Must be able to lift 125 pounds alone and 250 pounds with assistance.
- Minimum formal education of High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of 1 year job-related experience.
- Must have at least 2 years working experience for the position sought.
- Possess a Driver's License.
- Possess NYS DOH EMT Certification.
- Successfully complete an approved NYS EMT-B or AEMT course.
- Have 2 years of working experience.
