About the Role
The ESOL Instructor at AAFSC provides contextualized instruction to adults with limited English proficiency, equipping them with the civic and English language skills needed to thrive in their environment. The role involves fostering a supportive classroom atmosphere that empowers participants to achieve self-sufficiency.
Responsibilities
- Develop and adapt lesson plans to meet student needs and class objectives.
- Provide instruction and facilitate classroom activities aligned with class objectives.
- Prepare students for the Citizenship test and interview.
- Build instructional activities around reading components: alphabetics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
- Deliver instruction through various methods including individualized, small group, and whole class instruction.
- Facilitate learning using diverse resources such as textbooks, lectures, computer programs, and audio/visual aids.
- Assist students in developing digital and financial literacy skills.
- Maintain accurate student attendance records.
- Ensure lessons and activities have clearly defined outcomes and measurable skill gains.
- Maintain an accessible repository of curricula on organizational servers.
- Collaborate with program leadership to evaluate and refine curricula and activity plans.
- Complete all required paperwork and documentation in a timely manner.
- Report classroom issues immediately to the supervisor.
- Participate in assigned internal and external meetings and trainings.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Director.
Requirements
- Ability to teach both remote online and in-person classes.
- Experience teaching beginner adult students, including Literacy Learners.
- Excellent writing and editing skills.
- Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
- Experience teaching multiple levels in a single classroom.
- Flexible with an open enrollment schedule.
- Openness to learning about students' languages, cultures, and customs.
- Must complete 18 hours of professional development training annually.
- Experience in lesson planning, curriculum development, and implementation of structured programming for adult learners.
- Open to learning about cultural responsiveness, trauma-informed education, and language instruction.
- Proven ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
- Passion for AAFSC’s mission and vision.
- Job contingent on pre-employment background check and fingerprint clearance.
- U.S. Work Authorization required.
