About the Role
The Syracuse City School District is seeking a dedicated and diverse team of educators to partner in achieving its goals of improving student achievement and ensuring all students graduate high school ready for college and career. This role involves performing specialized clerical work, maintaining financial records and accounts, and assisting with complex financial tasks.
Responsibilities
- Processing invoice payments and updating vendor information while adhering to payment terms.
- Generating bills and invoices, managing customer accounts, reconciling payments, and resolving discrepancies.
- Collecting and depositing cash, balancing cash drawers, and reconciling discrepancies.
- Posting transactions to journals or subsidiary ledgers using manual methods or data entry terminals/PCs.
- Calculating and balancing payrolls, including overtime, deductions, garnishments, and adjustments.
- Receiving remittances, verifying amounts, issuing receipts, and computing applicable interest and penalties.
- Assisting in maintaining labor, material, and cost of operations records.
- Verifying and reconciling account balances according to prescribed procedures.
- Reviewing and checking financial records for accuracy and completeness.
- Operating standard office machines such as adding and calculating machines.
- Performing routine clerical tasks including sorting, indexing, and filing financial documents.
- Using data entry terminals or PCs for filing or retrieving information.
Requirements
- One year of full-time work experience with regular financial account keeping duties (e.g., bank statement reconciliation, ledger posting, journal entries, voucher checking) OR processing and maintaining fiscal transactions (accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash management, statistical data).
- Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university with an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration or Finance.
- Successful completion of three semester credit hours in college-level Accounting, Business Administration, or Finance.
- Must meet minimum qualifications outlined on the Onondaga County Civil Service job specifications.
- NYS HELPS Program allows hiring without Civil Service exam participation or appointment from an eligible list.
- Selected candidate will serve a 52-week probationary period.
- Successful candidate will be required to pass a fingerprint-based background check at a cost of $104.50 to the candidate.

Skills
- Good knowledge of financial account and record-keeping principles and practices.
- Good knowledge of standard office terminology, procedures, and equipment.
- Ability to perform arithmetic computations rapidly and accurately.
- Ability to apply bookkeeping principles to ledgers and journals.
- Ability to compile and prepare financial and statistical reports.
- Ability to learn to operate adding, calculating, and other office machines.
- Ability to use common office equipment including alphanumeric keyboards, photocopiers, and CRTs.
