About the Role
This internship offers a practical application of classroom and technical training within the reinsurance industry. Interns will be coached by experienced professionals, exposed to leadership, challenged as valuable team members, and mentored for future leadership roles in data science.
Responsibilities
- Support the development of statistical, machine learning, and GenAI techniques for underwriting, pricing, and claims management models.
- Assist in building and implementing solutions to improve the quality and speed of core operational processes, generating incremental revenue or reducing expenses.
- Research new data modeling approaches to uncover actionable insights or enhance processes.
- Collaborate across Munich Re functions to understand how analytics can influence business decisions.
- Network with existing data science groups at Munich Re.
Requirements
- Undergraduate or Graduate degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Data Science/Analytics, Applied Mathematics, Engineering (Physics, Bioinformatics) or equivalent program with coursework in manipulating large datasets.
- Comfortable working with and combining disparate and varied data sources.
- Familiarity with the analytics modeling lifecycle, including data gathering, design, recommendations, testing, implementation, communication, and revisions.
- Experience working with Python, SQL, or R (Python familiarity is required).
- Solid communication skills, including spoken & written and formal/informal presentation.
- Resourceful and able to learn quickly.
- Proven ability to thrive in a dynamic environment.
- Experience using git and an AI coding tool such as Claude Code or Codex (preferred).
- Experience working with LLM APIs and/or building agents (preferred).
- Previous exposure to insurance or financial services environment (preferred but not required).
- Must be a current student returning to in-class studies upon internship completion.
