About the Role
Engineering Managers at Monzo are part of mission-driven, cross-functional, autonomous teams. They are accountable for technical and delivery outcomes, supporting and developing engineering talent, and creating an inclusive team environment. The role involves people, product, and technical leadership.
Responsibilities
- Taking accountability for delivery across your squad(s), collaborating with the Technical Lead and Product Manager.
- Actively fostering a high bar for engineering excellence within your teams.
- Holding a high bar and clearly articulating expectations for technical outcomes, individual engineer performance, and growth.
- Leading and developing a group of 7-10 engineers through regular 1:1s and continuous feedback.
- Partnering with senior engineers to drive technical initiatives that raise the bar for engineering practices.
- Leading communication with stakeholders from other teams.
- Creating focus space for engineers to do their best work.
- Collaborating with the wider engineering organization to contribute to company-wide best managerial and technical practices and standards.
Requirements
- Experienced manager with a strong technical and delivery background.
- Previous experience as a software engineer.
- Comfortable operating with ambiguous problem areas with a high degree of autonomy.
- Delivery experience and ability to guide squads in achieving outcomes.
- Focuses on outcomes over processes, optimizing for the highest impact and leverage.
- Able to input, understand, and challenge engineering decisions while empowering the team.
- Understanding of what good looks like for a high-performing team of engineers and ability to chart a course.
- Able to coach people to achieve their goals.
- Natural ability to inspire and motivate a team.
