About the Role

The Electrical Control and Instrumentation Engineer designs and delivers electrical, control, and instrumentation systems for large industrial mine ventilation and heating projects. The role supports projects from concept and estimating through detailed design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and final acceptance. The successful candidate will work with multidisciplinary teams, clients, suppliers, and site personnel to produce safe, practical, and code-compliant solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Develop electrical, control, and instrumentation designs for industrial ventilation, fan, heating, and burner management systems.
  • Prepare design deliverables such as single-line diagrams, control schematics, panel layouts, wiring and termination drawings, P&IDs, general arrangement drawings, cable schedules, I/O lists, instrument indexes, bills of material, and equipment specifications.
  • Perform and document electrical calculations, including load and cable sizing, ampacity and voltage-drop calculations, equipment and transformer sizing, basic short-circuit calculations, grounding and bonding design, and equipment rating verification.
  • Develop, configure, test, and troubleshoot PLC, HMI, and SCADA applications for ventilation and heating systems, including alarms, interlocks, permissives, sequencing, communications, and operator interfaces.
  • Select and specify field instruments, control panels, motor control equipment, variable-frequency drives, networks, and related electrical components.
  • Develop control narratives, functional descriptions, cause-and-effect matrices, sequences of operation, and testing documentation.
  • Prepare material requisitions, review supplier quotations, complete technical bid evaluations, and coordinate vendor documentation.
  • Support cost estimates, proposals, scope development, project schedules, and technical clarifications for potential opportunities and active projects.
  • Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, factory acceptance tests, site acceptance tests, commissioning, start-up, and performance testing.
  • Provide construction and commissioning support, including field inspections, issue resolution, red-line markups, deficiency tracking, and as-built documentation.
  • Coordinate technical interfaces with mechanical, process, structural, project management, procurement, construction, and client teams.
  • Identify technical and project risks early, recommend practical solutions, and escalate issues when additional review or authority is required.
  • Prepare engineering documents for review and, where applicable, support sealing by the professional engineer responsible for the work.
  • Follow company quality procedures, project requirements, applicable codes and standards, and site health and safety requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related discipline. A diploma in electrical engineering technology may be considered for positions whose assigned duties do not require professional engineering licensure.
  • At least five years of relevant experience in industrial electrical design, process automation, controls, or instrumentation.
  • Hands-on experience developing PLC and HMI applications on at least one major platform, such as Rockwell Automation, Siemens, or Schneider Electric Modicon.
  • Working knowledge of industrial control systems, motor controls, variable-frequency drives, instrumentation, industrial networks, and electrical distribution systems.
  • Experience producing electrical and control design packages using AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, or comparable design software.
  • Ability to interpret and apply applicable codes and standards, including the Ontario Electrical Safety Code and relevant CSA, NFPA, IEC, and client standards.
  • Ability to prepare clear calculations, specifications, reports, design notes, test procedures, and project correspondence in English.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, organizational, and communication skills, with the ability to manage priorities across concurrent projects.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to industrial sites and work in field conditions as required by the project.
  • Professional Engineer licensed in Ontario, or eligibility to obtain one. A current P.Eng. license is required when the position includes independent professional engineering responsibility or sealing of engineering documents.
  • Experience with mine ventilation, large fans, industrial heating, burner management systems, gas or oil valve trains, combustion controls, and Honeywell or similar combustion products.
  • Experience with functional safety, machine safety, safety PLCs, or burner safety standards.
  • Experience with motor or fan vibration monitoring and the interpretation of basic vibration data.
  • Experience leading engineering work packages from concept through final acceptance while meeting budget and schedule commitments.
  • Experience with multidisciplinary projects, client-facing technical meetings, vendor coordination, and remote project teams.
