About the Role
Flatpay is seeking its first Legal Counsel for the UK entity to manage contracts, corporate law, employment law, data protection, and compliance. This role offers broad scope, direct impact, and proximity to key decision-making, with potential for future team growth.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the legal business partner, providing daily advice to Commercial, People, Customer Support, and Operations teams.
- Assess commercial, contractual, and regulatory risks for strategic decisions, product launches, and employment law matters.
- Manage relationships with external counsel for complex legal issues, integrating their advice with business rationale.
- Draft and review commercial agreements, terms & conditions, and develop standard templates.
- Manage UK employment law risks, including advising on complex cases, sensitive exits, and settlement agreements.
- Oversee regulatory changes such as the Employment Rights Bill, gender pay gap reporting, and TUPE.
- Ensure compliance with UK GDPR and DPA 2018 through risk assessments, procedures, and training.
Requirements
- Qualified solicitor in England and Wales with a current practising certificate.
- 3 to 5 years of post-qualification experience (PQE).
- Experience in private practice and/or in-house, preferably in a scale-up, fintech, or tech environment.
- Broad technical knowledge in commercial contracts, corporate law, UK employment law, and data protection.
- Ability to translate legal analysis into pragmatic business solutions.
- Demonstrated autonomy in setting priorities and managing external counsel.
- Excellent communication skills, providing actionable advice to commercial teams.
- Comfortable operating internationally and reporting to a group legal function.
