About the Role
Reporting to the Director of Engineering, you will lead the engineering team responsible for Scheduling, a critical and heavily used part of the Deputy platform. This role involves leading and growing engineers, guiding technical decisions, and delivering meaningful customer improvements. You will gain a deep understanding of the product and architecture to contribute to technical discussions, coach senior engineers, and make pragmatic trade-offs. Your primary impact will be through the team's performance and growth.
Responsibilities
- Lead the team by setting clear expectations, providing feedback, and coaching engineers.
- Build a team culture that encourages challenging ideas, learning from mistakes, and high standards.
- Create clarity during priority shifts, surface risks early, and help the team maintain a predictable delivery cadence.
- Hire thoughtfully and reduce single points of failure through cross-skilling and deliberate resourcing.
- Shape the technical direction by developing a deep understanding of the Scheduling product and architecture.
- Work with senior engineers to set technical direction and make decisions on architecture, frameworks, and build-versus-buy trade-offs.
- Guide improvements to the performance, reliability, security, and maintainability of a multi-tenant product.
- Stay close to engineering work through design reviews, architecture discussions, incident learning, and proofs of concept.
- Partner with Product, Design, and Data to translate strategy and customer problems into a focused roadmap with measurable outcomes.
- Balance near-term customer value with technical investment for a fast, dependable, and enterprise-scale product.
- Connect the team to Deputy's goals and explain the context behind priorities and trade-offs.
- Help evolve how we build with AI by using AI-assisted tools and forming opinions on their effectiveness.
- Help the team develop effective working practices for machine-drafted code, including review, testing, observability, and documentation.
- Maintain quality by ensuring shipped code is correct, secure, maintainable, and understood.
- Work with Product and Engineering on evaluation, guardrails, cost, latency, and graceful failure for customer-facing AI contributions.
Requirements
- Experience leading engineers, either as an Engineering Manager or a senior engineer with responsibility for technical direction, delivery, and growth of others.
- Strong technical judgment, with the ability to engage in design discussions, challenge assumptions, and explain engineering decisions to both technical and non-technical leaders.
- Experience delivering and operating customer-facing software, including making trade-offs between delivery speed, reliability, and long-term maintainability.
- A track record of developing engineers through clear expectations, regular feedback, and thoughtful coaching.
- Experience partnering with Product and Design to shape priorities and deliver outcomes.
- First-hand experience with AI development tools, with informed opinions and the ability to critically review their output.
- The ability to create momentum in ambiguous situations by identifying constraints, bringing people together, and making practical decisions.
- Experience building and operating distributed, cloud-native or multi-tenant SaaS systems at scale (nice to have).
- Experience designing for resilience across services, event-driven systems, and large relational or NoSQL data stores (nice to have).
- Experience shipping LLM-backed or agentic capabilities in production (nice to have).
- Experience working on workforce management, scheduling, or another operationally complex product (nice to have).
