About the Role
The Syracuse City School District is seeking a dedicated and diverse team of educators to partner in its goal of ensuring all students graduate high school with the skills needed to be ready for college and career. This role involves responsibility for providing systems support, including maintenance and upgrades to hardware, software, and networks. The position also includes creating end-user reports and providing systems training.
Responsibilities
- Provides technical hardware and software support to system participants.
- Installs new software releases, system upgrades, and resolves software-related problems.
- Performs system backup and recovery functions.
- Responds to user needs, including managing user accounts, troubleshooting applications, and programming new report templates.
- Performs routine preventative maintenance and problem resolution on computer equipment.
- Troubleshoots application problems to minimize errors and streamline workflow.
- Documents user requirements for new functionality.
- Manages databases and generates statistical reports.
- Consults with users to determine and plan for long-term system needs.
- Designs and implements paperless documentation.
- Coordinates the design, implementation, and maintenance of the network interface.
- Conducts training on the system and various computer-related topics.
Requirements
- Must meet qualifications per Onondaga County Civil Service.
- Successful candidate must pass an exam and be reachable on the resulting eligibility list to be retained.
- Successful candidate will be required to pass a fingerprint-based background check at the cost of $102.50 to the candidate.
Skills
- Thorough knowledge of information systems, principles, and methods of application.
- Good knowledge of basic repair and maintenance of computer equipment.
- Good knowledge of file structure, design, access methods, control, and information retrieval techniques.
- Good knowledge of the principles and practices of software installation and personal computer configuration.
- Good knowledge of database administration.
- Ability to work effectively with department staff from multiple agencies, computer technical staff, and outside vendors.

Experience Level
- One (1) year of work experience in systems administration (with Baccalaureate Degree)
- Five (5) years of work experience in systems administration
- Two (2) years of permanent competitive class status in the title of Junior Systems Administrator (for promotion)
Education Level
- Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a Baccalaureate Degree, or higher, in computer science.
Salary/Compensations
- The current starting salary for this position per the Unit 9 Collective Bargaining Agreement.
