About the Role
Project LAW at SLU is a grant-funded pre-law pipeline program designed to increase access to legal education and legal careers for students from historically underrepresented backgrounds. Project LAW seeks an experienced instructor to teach a fully online, four-week Legal Writing and Reasoning workshop for students participating in the program. The instructor will introduce students to foundational legal analysis and writing skills using the IRAC (Issue, Rule, Analysis, Conclusion) framework, with an emphasis on public interest caselaw, identifying legal issues, applying legal rules to facts, and communicating legal reasoning effectively.
Responsibilities
- Teach students to analyze legal problems using the IRAC (Issue, Rule, Analysis, Conclusion) framework and public interest topics.
- Complete required preparation, grading, and review activities associated with course instruction.
- Create course materials (lessons, PowerPoints, LMS modules, assignments, etc.) that develop students’ critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and written communication skills
- Hold live virtual classes that include discussions, exercises, and collaborative learning activities.
- Review and provide timely, constructive feedback on student assignments and written work.
- Monitor student engagement and communicate concerns regarding attendance or participation to program staff.
- Utilize online instructional technologies, learning management systems, and video conferencing platforms to support course delivery.
- Maintain regular communication with students regarding assignments, expectations, and course activities.
- Collaborate with Project LAW staff regarding course administration, student progress.
- Attend brief planning and debrief meetings with program staff as needed.
- Maintain accurate records of attendance, student participation, and assignment completion.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Experience teaching legal writing, legal reasoning, or related subjects.
- Ability to make complex legal concepts accessible to students with limited prior exposure to legal education.
