About the Role
The Education Program Manager is a strategic, mission-driven leader who serves as a vital thought partner to the Director of Education and Community Programs. This role actively shapes, critiques, and elevates A.C.T.’s school-based initiatives, including in-school, after-school, and summer residencies. The Manager must possess the deep instructional expertise and emotional intelligence required to build immediate trust with Teaching Artists, school partners, and internal executive stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Supervise and mentor Teaching Artists, providing pedagogical feedback and professional support.
- Direct the strategic hiring, onboarding, and contracting processes for Teaching Artists.
- Conduct class observations and evaluations to assess quality and provide feedback.
- Refine instructional curricula by reviewing Teaching Artists' lesson plans and processes.
- Coordinate and co-lead advanced training sessions and workshops for Teaching Artists.
- Track, verify, and approve biweekly payroll submissions for Teaching Artists.
- Potentially teach, direct, or facilitate select classes or professional development sessions.
- Manage day-to-day operations and communication for intensive residency schools and community partners.
- Serve as project manager and creative producer for student performances and exhibitions.
- Partner with classroom teachers and Teaching Artists to develop arts and arts-integration curricula.
- Track expenses and manage project budgets for school residencies.
- Facilitate planning and reflection meetings with school and community partners.
- Manage grant compliance and reporting for the San Francisco Department of Children, Youth, and Their Families (DCYF).
- Monitor student enrollment and attendance metrics.
- Author narrative reports and lead monthly invoicing in the DCYF Contract Management System (CMS).
- Design, distribute, collect, and analyze departmental evaluation surveys.
- Act as a core strategic partner to the Director, offering solutions to evolve the department's impact.
- Represent the department in cross-organizational meetings, advocating for space and artistic collaboration.
- Champion educational access, equity, and student needs internally and externally.
- Partner with Marketing, Finance, HR, and Development teams for organizational alignment.
- Provide hands-on support for community-wide education initiatives as needed.
Requirements
- A robust, proven background as a Teaching Artist or instructional coach with a deep understanding of the public school theater classroom.
- Bachelor’s degree in education, theater, nonprofit management, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- 3–5 years of progressive experience in arts education administration.
- Demonstrated experience with event production, including budget management and line producing.
- Demonstrated experience as a collaborative leader comfortable sharing a strong perspective.
- Exceptional emotional intelligence with a track record of cultivating inclusive, equitable, and trust-based relationships.
- Experience in and familiarity with the local arts education ecosystem.
- Knowledge of the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) and the SF Department of Children, Youth, and Their Families (DCYF) is preferred.
- Experience in and a sophisticated understanding of professional theater is preferred.
- Strong skills in Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
- Experience in Adobe Creative Suite, Asana and Slack is preferred.
- A heartfelt passion for the transformative power of theater and arts education.
- Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive environment.
- Ability to work a flexible full-time schedule, including occasional evenings and weekends.
- Ability to move frequently between A.C.T. administrative offices, theater spaces, and off-site partner schools.
- Ability to pass a Livescan fingerprint/background check and provide proof of negative TB testing (required after hire).
- Ability to safely lift and transport production materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
