About the Role
The Controls & Embedded Systems Engineer will own the embedded controls and firmware for American Turbines' first turbine, managing its operation from start-up to safe shutdown. This role involves close collaboration with the test team, shaping component choices, and defining control logic and firmware based on real-time testing feedback. The engineer will be embedded in the build process from the early stages.
Responsibilities
- Own the embedded controls and firmware for the first turbine.
- Manage turbine operation from start-up to steady-state.
- Ensure safe operation through testing and shutdown procedures.
- Define control logic and firmware based on engine testing.
- Work directly with the test team to integrate sensors and control logic.
- Shape component choices based on controllability and observability.
- Close the loop between testing feedback and system requirements.
Requirements
- Experience with embedded controls and firmware for rotating machinery, engines, or similar real-time, safety-critical systems.
- Proven experience taking a system from concept to operational status.
- Ability to think in terms of failure modes and control loops.
- Comfort with making judgment calls under uncertainty.
- Preference for hands-on involvement with running systems over documentation.
