About the Role
American Turbines is designing small modular gas turbines for distributed power generation. The Lead Engineer will own the timeline for the company's first turbine, from its current state through a fully built and tested demonstrator. This role involves creating and executing an engineering plan, managing a team, and actively participating in hands-on engineering tasks.
Responsibilities
- Own the timeline for the first turbine demonstrator.
- Develop a single execution plan from multiple engineering workstreams.
- Set the schedule, break it into tasks, and delegate tasks to engineers.
- Run daily and weekly engineering meetings.
- Track progress against the plan.
- Step in to assist with tasks such as fixturing parts or running tests.
- Chase vendors.
- Pick up engineering work directly when the team needs it.
- Debug test rig issues.
- Sanity-check design calls.
- Be present in the shop and in planning meetings.
- Conduct quick check-ins and deep dives as needed.
Requirements
- Proven track record of taking hardware from 0 to 1 and shipping it.
- Experience in a small, fast-moving hardware team is ideal.
- Ability to build a realistic timeline.
- Discipline to hold a team to a schedule.
- Willingness to get hands dirty when the schedule requires.
- Experience leading more senior or specialized engineers.
- Ability to earn trust rather than assume it.
- Default to build-and-test over simulation.
- Ability to distinguish between normal schedule slips and significant problems.
- Effectiveness at quick check-ins.
