About the Role

The Program Manager, Sport and Sustainability will play a central role in implementing the COC's environmental sustainability strategy and Climate Action Plan. This role will lead efforts to measure, manage, and reduce environmental impacts, contributing to emission reduction targets.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the implementation and evolution of the COC's Climate Action Plan.
  • Support the development of the organization's climate transition plan.
  • Identify emerging environmental sustainability issues, risks, and opportunities relevant to the sport sector.
  • Develop and manage the four-year budget, including forecasting and budget review activities.
  • Establish and evolve systems to track and assess sustainability performance and impact.
  • Review, update, and improve relevant KPIs, baselines, targets, and dashboards to measure progress.
  • Conduct an annual greenhouse gas emissions inventory.
  • Manage reporting obligations under the UN Sport for Climate Action Framework.
  • Track progress against sustainability objectives.
  • Utilize data and evidence to identify opportunities for improvement and demonstrate the value and impact of sustainability initiatives.
  • Ensure sustainability disclosures are accurate, transparent, and evidence-based.
  • Prepare reports for the senior leadership team and Board committees.
  • Collaborate with communications and digital teams to identify relevant storytelling opportunities about the COC and Team Canada athletes' contributions to sustainable sport.
  • Act as the organization's sustainability subject matter expert.
  • Lead sustainability projects from design through implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement.
  • Coordinate sustainability initiatives and campaigns, including Green Sports Day.
  • Support the marketing partnerships team in activating future sustainability-focused partnerships.
  • Identify funding and grant application opportunities, including through IOC Olympic Solidarity and other programs.
  • Support athlete engagement initiatives related to sustainability.
  • Liaise with NOCs, the ISOPC Network, IOC, and other partners.
  • Participate in UN, ANOC, and IOC working groups to advance climate action in sport.
  • Cultivate relationships with researchers and Indigenous communities to advance sustainability initiatives and maximize impact.
  • Contribute to fostering a culture where sustainability is viewed as a shared responsibility rather than a distinct function.
  • Collaborate with departments to develop and implement policies and guidelines related to key environmental impact areas (e.g., procurement, events, business travel, legal compliance, environmental risk management).
  • Create and deliver employee training programs tailored to relevant departments and teams (e.g., sustainable events, sustainable procurement practices, environmental reporting, effective communication, web content).
  • Support the implementation of sustainable procurement, travel, and event practices.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience implementing a sustainability program within an organization.
  • Post-secondary degree or equivalent experience in sustainability or a related field.
  • Four (4) to six (6) years of experience implementing environmental sustainability, climate action, ESG, or organizational sustainability initiatives.
  • Experience in the sport, events, entertainment, non-profit, or membership-based organization sectors is an asset.
  • Experience conducting or supporting greenhouse gas emissions inventories and climate reporting activities.
  • Familiarity with sustainability reporting frameworks, greenhouse gas accounting methodologies, and target-setting approaches such as the GHG Protocol and SBTi.
  • Professional proficiency in English and French, both written and spoken, is required.
  • General understanding and appreciation of the global and sport contexts in which the COC operates (e.g., multi-sport Games operations, brand and commercial activity regulations, international sport context).
  • Strong understanding of sustainability principles and environmental issues, and their business implications, including knowledge of sustainability frameworks and standards such as SBTi, GHG Protocol, and the Sport for Climate Action Framework.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and implement sustainability initiatives and programs.
  • Collaborative spirit and relationship-building skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to produce reports, guidelines, presentations, and other documents.
  • Strong stakeholder management, influencing, and relationship-building skills, with the ability to navigate complex, multi-functional environments.
  • Ability to adapt to change and approach issues with a solutions-oriented mindset.
  • Ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously.
  • Strong project management skills and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
  • Demonstrate and represent the COC’s values, including Responsibility, Excellence, Fun, Respect, and Bravery.
  • Occasional travel within Canada or infrequent international travel may be required.
  • Potential for travel during Games.
  • Willingness to work some evenings and weekends.
