About the Role
This role will lead the unification of two engineering organizations into a single team, manage the largest engineering hub outside of Sydney, and serve as the primary engineering partner for UK commercial and product leaders. Reporting to the CTO in Sydney, the individual will collaborate with London-based executives and operate with autonomy.
Responsibilities
- Unify two engineering organizations (35 engineers, growing to 50) into one standard.
- Manage six to eight direct reports (engineering managers).
- Serve as the senior engineering voice for the London site, including dotted-line support for US-focused teams.
- Facilitate local leadership forums and foster an environment where engineers join and stay.
- Partner directly with UK commercial, clinical, and product leaders.
- Evaluate trade-offs through a commercial lens and communicate them.
- Evaluate whether proposed initiatives deliver real value and instill product instinct in the management team.
- Own senior hiring in London.
- Set clear quality standards for the team.
- Mentor engineering managers to become effective hiring partners.
- Strengthen delivery predictability, quality, and operational reliability across distributed teams (Sydney, London, US).
Requirements
- Managed an engineering organization of 30+ people through managers.
- At least five years of experience developing other managers.
- Experience guiding an organization through significant structural change (integration, restructure, operational overhaul).
- Experience using AI tooling to change how a team builds, not just personal workflow.
- Demonstrated commercial fluency, including conversations on revenue, margin, and prioritization.
- Experience building and scaling systems from the ground up.
- Technically strong and able to partner credibly with senior engineers.
- Ability to evaluate system architecture and identify weak technical estimates.
- Comfortable getting on the tools to prototype or unblock the team.
- Experience governing an ecosystem built on React, React Native, TypeScript, Go microservices, GraphQL, Kubernetes, and GCP.
- Comfortable managing a site distant from headquarters across time zones.
- Proficiency in asynchronous communication, operating with high agency, independence, and clarity.
