About the Role
Shrub Oak International School (SOIS) is seeking a Family Nurse Practitioner to provide primary and urgent care services to students within a therapeutic day and residential school setting. This role is crucial for ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of autistic children, adolescents, and young adults with complex co-occurring conditions.
Responsibilities
- Provide primary and urgent care services to students within the residential treatment setting.
- Record medical histories, symptoms, and follow-up care coordination.
- Diagnose health issues, administer, and oversee patient care plans.
- Prescribe and administer medication with general oversight.
- Consult and collaborate with the facility dining team on specialized dietary requirements.
- Consult and collaborate with healthcare professionals and families regarding student medical care.
- Provide on-call (off-hours) medical support for crisis and emergencies.
- Partner with nurses to ensure timely scheduling and completion of specialty appointments.
- Transport students in a company vehicle to appointments as needed.
- Communicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding medical needs and treatment updates.
- Provide training to students and families for home treatment management.
- Disseminate relevant medical information to school staff and parents/guardians while maintaining confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.
Requirements
- Master’s degree (MSN) from an accredited program.
- Active RN licensure in NYS.
- Family Nursing board-certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner with prescriptive privilege is preferred.
- Knowledge of psychopharmacology and medication management required.
- NYS Education Dept registration as a Family NP is preferred.
- CPR and First Aid certification required.
- 3+ years of experience working as a Family Nurse Practitioner is required; 5 or more years is preferred.
- Valid driver’s license with the ability to pass a DMV driving abstract screening.
- Experience working with children and adolescents with disabilities is required.
- 2+ years working with the autistic population is preferred.
- Boarding school environment experience is preferred.
- Experience handling complex medical, emotional, and psychological situations with a holistic approach.
- Previous participation in research, training, or professional development activities related to child and adolescent psychiatry or special education.
- Ability to ambulate around the campus, including hills, stairs, grass, and gravel.
- Ability to react and move quickly during student crisis.
- Ability to run across campus and throughout the school to catch/monitor an eloping student or remove yourself from an unsafe situation.
- Ability to pass TCIS (Therapeutic Crisis Intervention Training for Schools).
- Ability to bend, stretch, sit, stand, crouch, or kneel for sustained periods if implementing a hold.
