About the Role
DreamYard seeks a Director of Finance to own accounting, budgeting, forecasting, cash management, grant finance, reporting, audit, and internal-control functions. This role translates financial information into clear recommendations for leadership and the Board, manages the accountant, and ensures timely, accurate, GAAP-compliant financial operations, combining strategic planning with hands-on review.
Responsibilities
- Lead the annual organization-wide budget process, including calendar, templates, assumptions, department targets, and final budget consolidation.
- Distribute monthly budget-to-actual reports and conduct variance reviews with budget owners, updating forecasts and action plans.
- Maintain a rolling cash-flow forecast, monitor liquidity, and alert leadership to potential shortfalls or financing needs.
- Prepare quarterly forecasts, multi-year financial scenarios, contingency plans, and trend analyses.
- Prepare Finance Committee and Board materials, including financial statements and budget-to-actual results.
- Partner with the COO and external financial consultant on financial strategy and risk management.
- Participate in Leadership Team meetings, connecting financial decisions to the organization's mission and equity commitments.
- Own the monthly close process, reviewing accounts payable, accounts receivable, reconciliations, payroll entries, and accruals.
- Review the trial balance and reconcile all balance-sheet accounts monthly, investigating unusual items.
- Produce monthly GAAP financial statements and management reports.
- Maintain the chart of accounts, dimensions, reporting structures, and supporting workpapers.
- Review grant and contract agreements, documenting funding details and restrictions.
- Maintain grant budgets and revenue schedules, reconciling restricted net assets and grant expenses.
- Coordinate with Development and Program teams to verify coding, allowable costs, and reporting data before submission.
- Oversee government contract billing portals and schedules, tracking submissions and collections.
- Review financial reports for funders and ensure reported amounts align with the general ledger.
- Collaborate with the Director of Development on reconciliation reports and meetings.
- Lead the annual financial-statement audit, preparing timelines, request lists, and coordinating responses.
- Maintain and update finance policies, approval limits, segregation of duties, and internal controls.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, nonprofit reporting requirements, grant terms, and regulatory filings.
- Supervise the accountant through clear work assignments, coaching, and training.
- Improve and document finance workflows, standardize reports, reduce manual work, and strengthen data access.
- Administer and optimize Sage Intacct and connected finance tools.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field.
- Seven or more years of progressively responsible nonprofit accounting and finance experience, preferably in a grant-funded organization.
- Demonstrated experience leading budgeting, forecasting, month-end close, financial reporting, cash management, audit preparation, and internal controls.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit financial reporting, restricted contributions, government contracts, grant accounting, and revenue recognition.
- Advanced Excel skills and proficiency with accounting systems.
- Ability to prepare and analyze financial statements, identify risks and trends, and convert findings into practical recommendations.
- Experience supervising accounting staff and setting clear standards for accuracy, timeliness, documentation, and follow-through.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to explain complex financial matters to diverse stakeholders.
- Strong judgment, attention to detail, time management, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
