About the Role

This role focuses on tailoring high-level quantum algorithms to run on Quantum Motion's hardware. Successful candidates will be familiar with established quantum algorithms and the compilation tools required to map circuits to a target gate set. You will research and develop processes to run circuits on target architectures while considering quantum error correction schemes and hardware specifics, monitoring resource consumption. This role provides a critical interface between applications and hardware development, identifying algorithms compatible with future hardware iterations. It offers a rare opportunity to be an early employee at a startup shaping the future of quantum computing, with multiple opportunities for professional growth and impact.

Responsibilities

  • Develop processes to map high-level quantum algorithms to a hardware-compatible instruction set for fault-tolerant computation.
  • Understand tradeoffs between various quantum error correction tools and identify the best choice.
  • Factor architecture-level requirements and capabilities into the algorithm-to-hardware breakdown.
  • Account for resources required to run a target algorithm, including qubit count and runtime.
  • Collaborate with researchers to identify new directions and communicate constraints of existing approaches.
  • Work with software engineers to automate parts of the compilation process.
  • Present research results at internal and external meetings and events.

Requirements

  • Top-tier education and PhD in physics, mathematics, computer science, or a related discipline.
  • Track record of research in quantum computing, including work on applications, algorithms, architectures, or quantum error correction.
  • Knowledge of commonly-used algorithmic techniques (e.g., quantum phase estimation, block encodings, amplitude amplification).
  • Familiarity with common error correction techniques (e.g., surface codes, magic state distillation).
  • Experience writing up results in reports or scientific journals.
  • Ability to clearly present scientific work to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Enthusiasm to travel for conferences and other events.
  • Familiarity with using Python for research and development.
  • Strong collaborative mindset with good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Inquisitive nature and logical approach to problem-solving.
  • Passion for tackling big challenges and developing quantum computers.
  • Prior work or expertise relating to emerging “good quantum LDPC” codes, their decoders, etc. (Desirable)
  • Understanding of silicon-spin hardware systems is a bonus (Desirable).
  • Examples of previous work compiling quantum algorithms to a target architecture, including resource accounting (Desirable).
  • Prior experience in the quantum computing industry or a startup environment (Desirable).
  • Proficiency with quantum software tools such as qualtran, Qiskit, QuEST, or PennyLane (Desirable).
  • Use of quantum intermediate representations such as QASM or QIR (Desirable).
  • Experience optimising and running software scripts on HPC resources, including the use of GPUs (Desirable).
