About the Role
In Flutter COO, we work with experts across Flutter to build, deploy, and communicate the Flutter Edge. We are seeking a Principal Data Solution Architect to design and deliver distributed data platforms that power Flutter's applications across Gaming and Sportsbook. This role focuses on execution and solutions delivery, building scalable, high-performance data platforms for real-time and batch data processing. You will architect distributed data platforms including real-time streaming infrastructure, distributed compute platforms, object storage solutions, and SQL/NoSQL data stores. You will collaborate with application teams, Product, and Engineering to design data solutions for business-critical applications, ensuring efficient data production, consumption, and processing at Flutter's scale. This role is key to supporting Flutter Functions' data strategy with practical, executable solutions, requiring strong convictions in distributed systems approaches while remaining pragmatic and responsive to immediate needs.
Responsibilities
- Drive platform capability improvements by enhancing distributed data platforms using Spark, Databricks, Kafka, Pulsar, Cassandra, and object stores.
- Enable application data consumption by understanding data production/consumption patterns and designing solutions for efficient data access, real-time streaming, and batch processing.
- Architect data streaming solutions using Kafka and Pulsar for low-latency data delivery.
- Design distributed data structures with engineering teams for systems like Cassandra, optimizing for read/write patterns, scalability, and performance.
- Deliver cloud-native data solutions on AWS, leveraging services like Databricks, S3, and distributed compute frameworks.
- Provide technical leadership and mentoring to engineers and architects on distributed data platform patterns.
- Develop executable roadmaps that deliver near-term business value and progress toward target state architectures.
- Partner with engineering teams to understand data needs and translate them into scalable platform solutions.
- Design solutions for projects, including ADRs, data models, technical designs, and assessments.
- Influence technical strategy for data platforms, considering future application requirements and emerging technologies.
- Manage technology risk by identifying, communicating, and mitigating risks associated with distributed systems and data platform decisions.
- Ensure operational excellence by designing solutions with security, cost optimization, performance, regulatory requirements, and compliance in mind.
- Contribute to architecture governance by supporting forums and ensuring timely review and alignment.
Requirements
- Extensive experience designing and implementing distributed data platforms at scale, with a deep understanding of distributed systems principles and trade-offs.
- Proven track record architecting and implementing real-time/low-latency data streaming platforms, including patterns for event-driven architectures.
- Experience with Cassandra or similar distributed databases, understanding data structures, partitioning strategies, consistency models, and performance optimization, as well as OLTP databases like PostgreSQL and MySQL.
- Strong experience with Apache Spark and distributed data processing, including optimization, performance tuning, and large-scale batch/streaming workloads.
- Demonstrated experience with Cloud Providers such as AWS, GCP, Azure, including Databricks.
- Strong understanding of how applications produce and consume data, designing platforms that serve application needs efficiently across real-time and batch use cases.
- Track record of delivering large-scale data platforms for high-volume B2C software businesses, preferably in Gaming, Sportsbook, or similar real-time domains.
- Demonstrated experience contributing to data modernization and migration initiatives and ability to drive a data-first approach.
- Proven ability to execute and deliver practical solutions, working closely with engineering teams.
- Demonstrated experience productionizing data science and ML/AI capabilities through the data lifecycle.
- Experience designing and implementing compliant data solutions across regulated environments (PCI/SOX/HIPAA).
