About the Role
As Senior Legal Counsel, you will provide strategic commercial legal advice and strong counsel to support AbbVie’s core businesses and enterprise-wide initiatives. You will rapidly gain knowledge of our industry and business, manage priorities, provide strategic advice, and find innovative legal solutions to complex Japanese and global matters.
Responsibilities
- Serve as lead counsel in strategic priority areas and key brand teams, providing advice and risk-based solutions on legal, regulatory, and compliance issues.
- Provide clear advice to senior business clients and executive management on Japanese laws and regulations, focusing on promotion, patient support, market access, launch strategies, and collaboration models.
- Offer business-oriented, efficient, flexible, and long-term solutions for core strategic business challenges, anticipating hurdles and evaluating business impact.
- Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of agreements, including complex commercial and corporate agreements.
- Support executive matters delegated by the Legal Director and drive workstreams within the Global Legal team in novel areas of law or business transactions.
- Adopt a problem-solving approach and sound risk perspective to find solutions to a wide range of matters.
- Advise and resolve multi-faceted legal matters in practice area without supervision.
- Select and direct the work of outside counsel, defining and managing project objectives and budget when specific technical expertise is required.
- Find solutions and unlock opportunities for business clients consistent with the law, policies/procedures, and AbbVie’s Code of Conduct.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Law degree
- Bar admission (Japan, US or other major jurisdictions)
- Minimum of 10+ years of relevant legal experience, preferably as an in-house counsel in an international organization or from a reputable law firm.
- Legal experience and expertise in the life science industry is strongly preferred.
- Experience with general contracts, corporate and commercial law
- General understanding and experience in intellectual property matters (protection of trade secrets, patents and trademarks)
- Solid understanding of anti-bribery laws, ethics and compliance
- Understanding and experience with personal data protection and competition law matters
- Highly motivated and enthusiastic, with cultural sensitivity to working in a diverse and inclusive multi-national company.
- Strong communication and influencing skills.
- Ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams and build strong relationships with stakeholders, including senior leadership.
- Ability to work independently and prioritize key business priorities.
- Use good judgment, deliver initiatives on time, be agile and proactive.
- Ability to learn about the business quickly and extensively, grasp the “essence” of matters or issues and understand the impact of decision-making.
- High ethical standards and integrity, acting as a role model and legal business leader within the organization.

- Native level Japanese language skills (oral and written)
- Excellent English skills (oral and written)
- Proficient with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Power Point, Excel, Word, SharePoint, etc.)
