About the Role

The ACLU seeks a Senior Advisor to the Chief Political Officer to support the National Political Advocacy Department's mission of building power for an accountable, representative democracy. This role acts as a strategic partner to the Chief Political and Advocacy Officer (CPAO), helping to advance departmental priorities through effective coordination and execution.

Responsibilities

  • Ensuring the department's activities align with the CPAO’s vision
  • Serving as a trusted advisor and thought partner to the CPAO on department priorities, strategic initiatives, and emerging issues
  • Identifying areas of work to be prioritized by the team and campaigns/initiatives in response to unexpected developments
  • Strategically managing the CPAO’s time, prioritizing opportunities, and identifying focus areas
  • Tracking the CPAO’s to-do list and next steps, ensuring timely involvement in key decision-making processes
  • Preparing the CPAO for meetings by ensuring they have necessary information
  • Attending meetings with the CPAO as needed
  • Managing the team for the CPAO and NPAD Leadership when needed
  • Representing the CPAO in key internal and external meetings
  • Supporting the CPAO in maintaining strong relationships with key external stakeholders
  • Overseeing the execution of key strategic initiatives for successful implementation
  • Facilitating effective communication and collaboration across the NPAD leadership team and staff
  • Facilitating/leading NPAD Exec and NPAD Leadership meetings
  • Planning and executing leadership development for NPAD’s leadership team
  • Providing support for the implementation of people management principles development and skills training programs
  • Developing a model for senior leadership transitions, focusing on team preparations and new leader onboarding plans
  • Managing sensitive information and communication with discretion
  • Maintaining big-picture awareness of emerging opportunities, challenges, and trends across all issue areas
  • Maintaining awareness of work to facilitate representation of the Department internally and externally
  • Driving efforts to fundraise on behalf of the Department and the broader ACLU
  • Developing staff capacity to work collaboratively and grow expertise and skills
  • Strengthening the Department
  • Exercising significant independent judgment to solve problems and determine creative solutions
  • Demonstrating flexibility and the ability to adjust priorities to adapt to changing environments
  • Engaging in other leadership and management duties as assigned
  • Engaging in special projects and other duties as assigned by the CPAO
  • Traveling nationally as programming demands
