About the Role

Great Oaks Charter School – New York City is seeking a dynamic, creative, mission-aligned urban educator to join our team as a High School ELA Teacher. Teachers at GO-NYC High School are responsible for preparing each of our students for college & career success through rigorous instruction and maintaining consistently high expectations for conduct. Teachers are models of the hard work, desire for learning, and character that we expect of our students.

Responsibilities

Demonstrate solid knowledge and understanding of the content matter.
Establish, communicate, and demand high expectations for student learning and quality of work.
Utilize a multitude of instructional strategies and activities that are academically rigorous and highly engaging.
Execute detailed lesson plans mapped to a year-long academic plan to address learning needs.
Take full responsibility for student failure and constantly work to respond to students’ learning needs.
Consistently send the message that this work is important, that the student can do it, and that you will not give up on a student.
Track and analyze student data to identify student learning needs and set ambitious, attainable goals for student progress.
Plan and implement strategies to achieve targets related to student learning outcomes.
Work collaboratively with the principal and other teachers to develop and revise curriculum based on assessment data.
Maintain an efficient, respectful, and positive tone in your classroom.
Utilize time to maximize student learning and communicate a constant, tangible sense of urgency.
Ensure that all students are on task at all times during a lesson.
Clearly enforce and emphasize school rules, values, and expectations.
Build relationships with students that demonstrate an open concern and a sense of responsibility for students’ academic and personal growth.
Supervise students during lunch and transition periods.
Put in an extraordinary amount of time and effort to contribute to student and school success.
Independently assume additional responsibilities when necessary and demonstrate leadership.
Make frequent phone calls, keeping parents informed of successes and struggles.
Maintain an orderly school culture.
Occasionally lead professional development sessions.
Fulfill other duties that may be necessary to achieve the mission of the school.

Requirements

Proven success in implementing high-quality instruction that leads to the improvement of student achievement in an urban school.
Exceptional relationship-building skills.
Ability to communicate clearly to multiple stakeholders.
Pass a background check through fingerprinting.
Receive security clearance to work at Great Oaks NYC.
Proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident status.

The Great Oaks Charter School - New York City (GO-NYC) opened in the Fall of 2013 on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.
The school currently serves approximately 310 students in 6th-11th grades.
At scale, Great Oaks - NYC will serve students in grades 6th-12th.
GO-NYC recently opened its doors in its new location at 240 Bleecker Street in the West Village.
At GO-NYC, we utilize a full inclusion model which means that every core class is taught as an Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) classroom.
Our classrooms will typically have two co-teachers (one content, one special education) as well as an Americorps Fellow working with students every day.
We believe in the power of deeper learning and know that learning is more than preparing students to be successful on a high-stakes standardized test so we give them multiple and diverse opportunities to develop significant knowledge and skills, use their knowledge to produce something original, and connect their learning in every lesson to who they are and who they want to become.
We work to understand the grade-level challenges and triumphs and use it to measure and reflect on what students know and are able to do.
