About the Role
We are seeking a Senior Java Backend Developer to join our team, focusing on building and enhancing enterprise applications for a financial services client. This is a hands-on role requiring strong Java backend expertise and comfort in complex enterprise environments, with opportunities for collaboration with technical and business stakeholders. We are also interested in engineers keen on leveraging AI to improve the software delivery lifecycle.
Responsibilities
- Designing, developing and enhancing scalable backend applications and services using Java and Spring-based technologies
- Building and maintaining APIs and microservices that support high-volume, business-critical applications
- Working across the software delivery lifecycle, including solution design, development, testing, code review and production support
- Collaborating closely with developers, Business Systems Analysts, Technical Leads and other stakeholders to translate business requirements into effective technical solutions
- Applying sound object-oriented design principles, engineering practices and design patterns to produce maintainable, high-quality software
- Developing and integrating RESTful APIs and services within complex enterprise environments
- Working with relational databases and data persistence technologies
- Participating in code reviews, automated testing, debugging and performance optimization
- Contributing to continuous improvement of engineering practices, development processes and delivery effectiveness
- Using modern development tools and exploring AI-assisted engineering techniques to improve productivity and quality across the software development lifecycle
- Communicating effectively with client and internal teams and contributing to a collaborative, high-performing delivery environment
Requirements
- 5+ years of professional software development experience, with strong hands-on experience developing backend applications in Java
- Strong experience with Spring and Spring Boot
- Experience designing and developing REST APIs and microservices
- Strong understanding of object-oriented programming, software design principles and common design patterns
- Experience working with relational databases, SQL and core database concepts
- Experience with Git-based source control and modern software development practices
- Experience writing and maintaining automated tests and participating in code reviews
- Strong debugging, problem-solving and analytical skills
- Experience working within Agile software delivery teams
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with both technical and business stakeholders
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience
- Previous experience within banking, payments or financial services
- Experience building or supporting high-volume, transaction-oriented systems
- Experience with cloud-native application development and modern enterprise architectures
- Experience with messaging, event-driven architectures or distributed systems
- Hands-on experience using AI-assisted software development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code or similar
- Interest in applying AI across activities such as requirements analysis, solution design, coding, testing, debugging and code review
